You know that animals are living things. They have to move from one place to another for food, and to escape from enemies.
Ow do they move? They use their legs, wings or fins to move about. Most animals living on land have legs. They walk and run using their legs.
Birds have legs and wings. They use their legs to move about on land, and use their wings to fly in the air.
Most insects have also got wings. Butter flies, houseflies and bees have small wings.
Fish live in water, and they can’t run or fly. They can swim along the water. They use their fins and tails to swim.
Some animals have no need to move. They are picked up by some other animals, and they live on their bodies. Such animals are called parasites. Bugs, lice, etc. are parasites. But some times parasites also move about.
The starfish, sea anemones and most of the shell fish have a slow creeping motion.
Frogs are good long jumpers. Some frogs can jump up to 3 meters across.
Snakes and lizards are called reptiles. Snakes have no legs. They move by crawling. Lizards use their legs to move along.
The sea anemones can shoot down their prey with a kind of poison. This makes the prey helpless. The anemone then catches and eats it.
Many creatures trap their prey. Haven’t you seen a spider’s web? It is really a trap. Flies and small insects get stuck on these on these webs. They are caught and killed by the spider for food. The archer fish fires small water droplets on insects. They eat these poor insects which fall into the water.
The snake can swallow its food whole. It can eat animals which are bigger than it. The earthworm eats soil and decaying plants. It also feeds on ripe fruits.
Some animals like vultures feed on dead decaying matter. They are called scavengers. A parasite is an animal that lives in or on the body of another animal. They take food from their hosts and give back nothing.
Some animals have special equipments to deal with their food. Some birds have long pointed beaks. These help them to suck honey from flowers and catch worms from tree stumps.
- Sponge is an animal. Adult sponges o not move about. It is one of the few animals which can’t move.
- Some animals like the squid move along by kind of `jet propelsion’. It shoots water behind and moves like rockets do.
- Jelly fish are mostly carried by the sea. But they can move if they wish.
- Cheetah is the fastest animal on land. It can run at a sped of seventy kilometers an hour. That is the speed of a motor bike.
