Regarding slow speed of your PC, there can be two reasons, either your software are conflicting or your hardware is facing some trouble. These troubles, especially those related to software, can be solved in very easy steps. Many options are available to boost it up. Lets look at them one by one:
1. A very helpful characteristic of the new versions of Windows is the System Restore menu. User can create a new restore point whenever he wants and many of them are made automatically by the system itself whenever it feels some change in configuration. Though it is a very good option, it can capture a lot of space in your hard drive if left on. By default, it uses 12% space but eventually, it slows down your PC by many specific restore points like virus checking, disk fragmenting, etc. So try to limit the space you specify it. And periodically delete the unnecessary ones. It will significantly increase the speed.
2. Indexing Services is a program that processes indexes and updates lists of files on your computer. This is done so that when you search for something, it can search faster by scanning the index lists.
So, if you don't search your computer often, turn it off would better performance. Simply go to 'Start' button on taskbar, click on 'Control Panel' and select 'Add/Remove Programs'. Find the tab 'Add/Remove Window Components' and uncheck 'Indexing Services'. Click Next.
Open 'My Computer', click on 'Tools', select 'Folder Options', click on the 'View' tab to uncheck the 'Automatically search for network folders and printers' box.Click 'Apply' and then reboot your computer for changes to apply
3. Hard drive performance plummets as you near the drive's maximum capacity. So compress or remove the data that you don’t need quite often.
4. Windows XP (and Windows Vista) computers have features like smooth animated menus and transparent windows. These use processor resources, too, which means they can cause slowdown. Right-click the 'My Computer' icon and click 'Properties'. Click the 'Advanced' tab and under 'Performance', click 'Settings'. Choose to switch off some of these effects and see the improvement in your PC's performance
5. Check the programs that load during system startup. If you have many programs listed in there, naturally all the programs would work very slow. So remove the programs that you don’t want in the system startup.
6. Periodically defragment the hard disk. It insures smooth functioning of the Operating System.
7. Don’t let dust and dirt accumulate in your CPU’s case. It overheat the system and so slows down your PC.
8. Regarding hardware related problems, you can try increasing your RAM so as to increase processing speed.
