The new Indian Rupee symbol became official as the Unicode Technical Committee has accepted it in the Oct 2010 release of Unicode Standard.

The official status for the new Rupee symbol came within three months of it's launch. On Jul 15, 2010 India launched new Rupee symbol, which brought together Devanagari as well as Roman letter. It was designed by an IIT post-graduate, D Udaya Kumar.
