What does the picture on the home page(that with a hammer-like image) behind the Share Knowledge secion signify. If no particular significance, I think there is no harm in removing it as it is not adding to the beauty of the site.

It appears like the watermark left on a glass sheet by a glass of water...

Is it not possible to eliminate it from the home page? I feel it is reducing the attractiveness of the page.

It is part of the image. I will try to edit the image and see if I can remove it or not.
