The statistics also show that TN attracted the third highest number of domestic tourists in 2009. Andhra Pradesh topped the list, thanks to the Tirumala temple, and Uttar Pradesh was second.

"During the first half of 2010, the state recorded a 26% growth in domestic tourist arrivals compared to the corresponding period last year," said Mohandoss, adding that safety in Tamil Nadu was a major reason for this growth. The highest number of domestic visitors are from Andhra Pradesh followed by Karnataka, Kerala, West Bengal and Bihar.

Chennai is also a Mecca for medical tourism. TTDC has identified Meditour India, a voluntary non-profit medical organisation, as the nodal agency to promote wellness tourism. The organisation comprises medical practitioners, tourism department officials and representatives of the health department. TTDC also provides guides to accompany foreigners seeking medical care.

The Union tourism ministry says Tamil Nadu had 23.7 lakh international tourists in 2009, Maharashtra followed with 20 lakh, and Delhi with 19.6 lakh.
It is great news for Tamilnadu Tourism Industry. This news will motivate other to visit Tamilnadu!!

The tamilnadu tourism division should take some more initiatives to attract more tourists. More temples are there in tamilnadu which will attract foreigners :)
I think presence of famous temples is the attraction here. What about the count of international tourists?
This is good news, yes presence of beautiful and famous temples does help. The figures of 2009 international tourists also look good. Indeed good signs!!
I wish tamilnadu tourist department to continue the good work. :)
i never thought that TN can attract so much tourists to raise to third in that list. Nice information Sajee.
Yes it is due to famous and historic temple TN is attracted by more tourist..HOpe the place attracts more if maintained well..

Though in India there are lot of historic and scenic beauty places due to poor maintainance and inadequate transportation they are getting ignored...
But the tourist guides in TN have a tendency to demand more money from the international tourists as they have no idea about it.This should be somehow managed properly.
I do not think chennai has much tourist places!! Union ministry would have assumed bangaloreans and other city people who visited chennai as foreigners :)
Below given is a link that will throw some light on some of the tourist places in and around chennai and also tamilnadu.
