Mani Shankar Aiyyar is very right as there is no justification for spending luxuriously on the games when our children have no facilities. We are too poor for the games. This is unnecessary burden on people.
Secondly, the very membership of common Wealth headed by British monarch symbolizes colonial rule.
However, this is not appropriate time to oppose the commonwealth games. Mani Shankar Aiyyar should have raised the issue much earlier. Let the games be over. We may press for withdrawal from commonwealth later.

Kumaresh- Commonwealth is symbol of British rule. But I feel that this should have been pointed out much earlier. Now it appears too late. The issue of withdrawal from commonwealth can be raised after the games. I may here point out that varanasi Mayor has refused to participate in commonwealth game celebrations. I wrote this in one thread.
Rajni K- Commonwealth is really not an international forum but this is only a gathering of former colonies of British empire, who still owe allegiance to British crown. Commonwealth is simply a symbol of British colonialism and sooner we shed it, better it will be.
However, we should participate wholeheartedly in Olympics, Asiad and SARC games.

Yes Kumaresh- We can. We have no difficulty even with Commonwealth, if the head of this organization is appointed by rotation instead of accepting British King/ queen as ex officio head of the organization. Secondly, India's representatives in other commonwealth countries should be designated as 'ambassador' instead of 'high commissioner' as at present.
It appears that one condition of 'granting independence' through 'Independence of India Act' was that India symbolically express allegiance to British empire by remaining member of British commonwealth (the word 'British' later removed but is still implied).
We have no quarrel with English language as this is now ours. Commonwealth can also be ours if President of India becomes head of commonwealth by rotation among member countries.

Sajeetharan- Mani Shankar Aiyyar is one of the best talented person in Indian politics. His statement is definitely correct. However, he has been too late. commonwealth games are to begin soon. The issue can now be discussed after the games are over. Presently, all efforts should be made to successfully hold the games and our players should be in best form to participate in the games.
Sajeetharan- I agree that mani Shankar aiyyar is too outspoken and he changes his position more often. But what he has said about commonwealth games is true. again he has made a right statement at wrong time. Now the commonwealth games are very near and all must work to make it a success. The related issues can be discussed and sorted later.
