Displaying shockingly insensitive and biased approach of the statutory authorities, the Census of 2001 has clubbed the housewives whose basic chores are household duties like cooking, cleaning of utensils, looking after children, fetching water, collecting firewood have been categorized as non-workers and equated with beggars, prostitutes and prisoners who, according to Census, are not engaged in economically productive work," Justice Ganguly of Supreme Court said.

Kalyani... I think this should be Census of 2010.... Not Census of 2001 :) ;)
No Deepti, it is 2001 Census!! The 2010 Census is still not complete.
This is a reality that exists from so many years and was not known until now!!
This is really unfair..

You can't find any one else doing more productive work than a housewife..

And comparing with these people is really a black spot..

I am not agree with his statement.
:P :P :P

That is very unfair... :( :( :(

Hope to see change atleast by now!!!!
I agree with you Aastha. Comparing teh housewives with these is really very audacious on the part of the authorities! Also categorising housewives and prostitutes as unproductive is grossly unfair!

In reality it is the govternment employees and bureaucrats that are mainly unproductive!
It is shocking and surprising.
How they all can be clubbed together!!
Strange..
It is very unfair and it is sad to note that this has come to limelight only after 9 years.
This is really unfair. We are aware of this fact after a span of 9 years.... And just after a new census is yet to publish!!!
What a mind our policy maker has. It can be property of museum.

Are our policy makers Mind Mafias?
Yes,The sensus of 2001 is going behind and the new sensus process had started. Then comes the problems in old one.How many years back we are walking?
Tye supreme Court has adversely commented on this. The apex court has commented that this shows a gender bias. Secondly, it can be said only about beggars that they do not do productive job. The house wives are playing a very important role in managing family, which is basic social unit. The prostitutes are engaged in productive work even though considered immoral. The prisoners also perform work in prisons and are even paid for that. so, they also do productive work.
You are right Gulshan, prostitutes are also an important and major part of the economy even though prostitution is considered immoral and illegal. Also even if housewives are actually not earning anything, they are helping build the nation by taking care of and raising tomorrow's businessmen and professionals.
Yes, the description by different person for same thing will be different. In many persons view prostitution is not a profession while prostitutes consider them as their profession. So such things may happen!
Abid, but the fact remains that even if prostitution is immoral, it is an industry with crores of rupees involved in it. Therefore it should be categorized as productive!! At least it will give some sense of self-worth to the ladies and men (male prostitutes) involved in it.
Right kalyani. Here the question is of productive or non productive and not moral/immoral. Even doctors and advocates indulge in immoral activities.
The unproductive categories are beggars, sadhus and so called saints- not only unproductive but also harmful to nation. The prisoners are better as they are in process of reform in jail.
You are right Gulshan. I would categorize many politicians, MPs, MLAs etc are unproductive - worse ever lot than prostitutes who at least earn their bread honestly!
Its very pathetic of the sensus people, there should a category or classification for them.
It's one more instance of bureaucratic mindlessness. It just reflects the poor mindset of most of our bureaucrats who could be so ludicrously robotic that they utterly fail to put their minds to issues and matters before them!
