Hai Friends,

I have something thats interesting here.

Our Indian Customs are very interesting and have a great scientific reason too behind them....

Here we would discuss one issue daily...

Custom: While crossing a river, we throw coins into the river. It is told that we would get more money in return from the Goddess Laxmi.

Question: What is the scientific reason behind this???

Have fun

The only benefit of throwing cash in river is that the currency in circulation will decrease and prices will be controlled. It will be better if people throw Rs. 1000/- currency notes in any river.
No Ghulshan... :)

There is a scientific reason too involved in throwing "Coins" (not the notes) in the river.....
I hope there are very less members knowing about our cultural customs... :)
Good day guys!!

I knew about throwing coins in a wishing well but I did not about throwing coins while crossing river!

Do tell Deepti....don't build up so much suspense!!
Yes -- sure Kalyani..

In the olden days,we used to have copper coins (Annas), now replaced with the stainless steel coins.

As drinking water with copper metal is good for health, our old fore-fathers made it a custom... that it gives good luck, we get money in return...

Hope you have understood :)
Yes Deepti.... :) thank you for the info...

even now drinking water is stored in copper containers! :)
YES -- I have a habit ... came from my grandfather :)

I always keep water in Copper container at night and in the early morning drink that water...
:)
The copper coins are gone now and now it 's time to throw this custom into the river!
I agree Chinmoy. The currency is for transactions and not for throwing in rivers.
:) YES... thats true....

As we used to have copper coins in the olden days, the custom was successful... But now, we do not have those copper coins, and still the custom is prevailing!!!!
Hey Deepti, Thanks a lot for sharing such a valuable point here..
I really didn't know about it..

Well I agree, we should drop this custom now..
Yes astha... I do watch many small kids throwing coins into the river....

Even I too used to follow this, when I was small

As in olden days, there used to be only river as their source of drinking water.... So the people used to make it more healthier way to drink water from river :)
If we have to follow the custom, we can throw the copper pieces into the river ,instead of throwing the non-copper coins. :)
No need Kumaresh... Hope we are not going to river for drinking water daily!!!!

We can buy a copper vessel and drink water from this daily... :)

Yes !! I understand my idea was foolish one...

Ooooo Kumaresh!

I thought some other answer would be there from your side..
Something like:
" I am not selfish... I want all my society to be healthy...So would drop copper pieces in river."

:P:P:P :) :)
Unexpected from expected one....

Throwing coins into the river is increasing begging habits.
& Begging is not good for the society.. :) { So my answer was for the welfare of society :laugh: :laugh: }

Have you seen the crowd of boys standing/swimming down the bridge to catch the coins which people are going to throw?

I have seen it many times :)
YES --- I have seen many times :)

YEs.. thats right Kumaresh :)
The coins are still thrown on the assumption that when the river dries up, they are collected by fishermen and others.

But now, the urchins and beggars take advantage, especially at rivers in the northern parts of the country..
Not only at the northern parts Sridevi... they are collected by beggars in South India too... I have seen many!!!!!!
