Love is fantastic and so beautiful but even if it is near perfect (because nothing but God can be perfect) why does it also bring pain and hurt?

This is like two sides of a coin. A coin cannot be with one side only. Thus life also has both sides. There is proverb- No gains without pain. Love is also a gain and so is accompanied by pain.
A successful love always gives happiness. But a love failure, due to any reason ( choosing the wrong person, opposition from parents, family situation etc ) always ends in pain for one person. This is applicable only for true love. But nowadays some love are done only for spending some time. That does not give pain.
Meean- sorrow is a result of attachment. Love necessarily brings attachment. Love entails sacrifice for the beloved. sacrifice means pain.
@Gulshan, you rightly said that love is sacrifice which results in pain.. also mainly because there are a lot of expectations from each other which do not necessarily get fulfilled resulting in pain. Unconditional love, if at all there is, there won't be much pain, but again, this is an unrealistic situation, hence the pain!!
Kalyani- love is always unconditional. The lover sacrifices on his or her own. There is no expectation as such from the other. But the feeling of love is a compelling force that makes both care for each other and do anything on Earth for beloved satisfaction. The love process itself is painful.
I think this time people mix expectation with love when more expectation then more heart break. So do not expect to person which you love then you will feel happy.
SAntosh- Love does not demand or expect from the other party. Really expectation is of the lover from himself to sacrifice anything for the beloved. To use urdu Shairi (verse), Parwana (worm) has no expectations from shama (light). Parwana expects himself to burn in shama.
