Upbringing children is a very delicate manner. seemingly innocent and ordinary routine may prove disastrous.
at Bangalore, a five year old kid was given spoonful of brandy occasionally by grandparents to protect from cold. This led the child to crave for wine. Now the child consumes a bottle of beer in no time.
So next time you feel your child has cold, consult a doctor and not give brandy.

This is very strange news....
I hope there are many tonics available for toddlers that are very effective(which contain very small traces of alcohol)... But they are far better than the advice of grand parents....
There are many very simple tips available with the grand parents.. but I haven't faced such problem!!!!!

Meean- Brandy and some times even rum in very small dose is given to children as well as the aged for protection against cold. Usually, the symptom of drunkenness does not surface. In the case at Bangalore, it is apparent that wine stock was kept openly in refrigerator or cup boards. The child was given spoonfuls of brandy. He would have seen elders consuming beer. So, he stealthily began consuming and became an addict. In this context, the movie 'sharabi' starred by Amitabh Bachan may be referred.
I have heard about it that brandy is being given as substitue of medicine for cold and also that it works faster than medicine, but parents should take care that it is not the right medicine every time children feels like cold, its good occasionaly when he is severely ill, or doctor is not easily available.
Large quantity of excess giving will surely make a person addict to it. Children will not understand it but parents should keep a strict watch.

Santosh- I feel that what you state is right. Brandy or wine (except beer) has warming affect but this is not medicine. I dislike the idea of taking liqueur as medicine. No doctor prescribes liqueur or brandy. This is for enjoyment and not medicinal purpose. However, administering small spoonful to small children and pregnant women is some times okay but this must be in limit. Moreover, any type of wine should not be openly taken in presence of children and wine stock should not be easily available to children.
