Nothing Mightier Than Media

With the brand new channel called 'Republic TV' being launched by probably the most influential and dynamic journo in our country- Mr. Arnab Goswami, we are yet again reminded of the limitless power and authority that media possesses. It has the ability to influence millions of people together. It can make or break a person's social status in the blink of an eye.

But like the old saying- " With great power come great responsibilities." What according to you are the pros and cons of such power and what ethics should the Indian media keep in mind?

Today we see how effective and important investigative journalism is to a nation with the unmasking of all the traitors in Kashmir and elsewhere too in the nation who have shown support by knowing facts but inspite of it  remaining silent for decades ..

Exactly. But unfortunately, investigative journalism comes with a heavy price. The journalists exposing such traitors face death threats and harassment from those who have vested interests in keeping the kettle boiling.

That's true...Republic TV started yesterday with a bang on a news break on Lalu and his links with the terrorist/murderer Shahabuddin calling the shots from his prison cell. So we can expect a lot from Arnab in the coming days..

It is nice to see Arnab back but somehow I found him a little distraught. He lacked his usual voice which left a void in his presentation. Hope his comeback makes him more popular and continues to raise vital issues.

Well he was away for almost 6 months which is a long time. He'll warm up to the task in no time. After all he's among the best in the business.

Arnab has been on now for 3   days and has unearthed 3 scams , Lalus, Kejriwal s and Shashi Taroor's ..of course we need to wait for the outcome of all these . But he and his team are doing what good investigative journalists are supposed to do..

Certainly, he has started his job bang on and there is no doubt about it. Now, we have to wait for the outcome of the issues he has raised. Today, I felt he was his normal self when he was discussing the National Herald case.

Shashi Taroor is getting it now for his possible role in his wife Sunanda's death. There seems to be a lot of evidence that points towards him and the way he has been reacting to the media by letting loose his henchmen shows that he is frustrated and stressed and not happy about what has been dug out !

Above given link is about the criminal case filed against Republic TV by Bennet, Coleman &Co Ltd who owns the Times Now channel. They have accused Arnab Goswami for infringing its copyright. If it is true then it's shameful. They played such tapes in their first two episodes which were the property of Times Now, If it is correct then Arnab must apologies for such a cheap act because he knows the rules very well and still he broke it.

The said tapes were procured by Prima Sridevi who is presently working with Arnab on Republic TV. The Times Now paymasters, under whom Arnab worked earlier, did not release the tapes then. According to law, they may be wrong, but ethically they're not as the journalist who featured in one of the tapes is in fact working for Republic TV. Times Now is seriously threatened by Arnab's new channel and is using every measure to stall his work. They forget that it was Arnab who was responsible for the large viewership that they still have.

Both Arnab and Sridevi have admitted that tapes pertaining to Shashi Taroor/ Sunanda case were in their possession since two years while they were still working for TOI. I am not sure how this would be viewed , because if the investigation was carried out on an unrelated independent capacity , does the company have any right over it? Also depends on what the terms of their employment was while they were working for the previous media house. I personally like TOI which has and still is doing a fantastic job esp with regard to investigative news reports..

Media have advantages and disadvantages too.Media plays vital role in spreading awareness among people. While sometimes they gives out wrong decision

on T.V and it badly effects to people.Offcourse they think about there T.R.P too.

Media reflects the mood and mindset of the society so it is as good or bad and caters to the popular demands . As far as TRPs are concerned , they will definitely package their contents accordingly . They have to survive and make a profit no doubt, but, if it is done in a dishonest manner they will not be able to survive for long since people can see through falsehood and sensationalism , especially if it becomes a practice with them

Here's a list of events which shows the reality of some media groups and journalists-

1. India Today's headline - Major Gogoi's 'inhuman' act awarded.

2.Sagarika Ghose (Rajdeep Sardesai's wife) tweets that Hindus are killing Muslims all over the country. In her words, she said-"wake up, go" which easily means that she was inciting communal violence.

3. Most of them (except Times Now and Republic)  calling the human shield incident "a violation of human rights" and not acknowledging the presence of mind of the Major who helped save lives.

These so called intellectuals are more dangerous than the stone pelters.

Added to all that , the Jammu and Kashmir Director general of police Munir Khan  has now come up with a statement saying that he will file an FIR against Major Gogoi and follow it through...as long as it is fair and one sides , no problem !

Incidentally this is an article that appeared in Indian express which covers the incident differently ..
