There is a big trend towards becoming so selfish and self-centered and not caring for the elders in the family or even brothers and sisters.  We not do seem to be bothered about others and we are so much concerned about Facebook, Twitter and smartphones.

Can we come out of this and can be instill some values in our children?

How can we reverse the very dangerous trend of selfishness, that is so much part of us?

Selfishness is our natural instinct to take care of ourselves, even animals are selfish at certain times. We take care of ourselves then only we can take care of others. Due to the known fact that we live in a society, we are bound to control it but somewhere behind our mind where we are not aware of our selfish behavior.

Everyone is selfish. We all try to look after our families, our own children and just imagine as an example that if our children are not our children but some one else's children then we would not care for them like we do right now. Why we care for our family so much? Because we consider our family as our family if our family hurts us then sometimes, people leave their family because the feeling of that this family is our's gets away.

Selfishness is a requirement of nature to survive in this world. It's in the law of survival and nature to take care of ourselves to survive. There is nothing wrong in being selfish but not caring for others is wrong. We can be selfish enough to able survive financially, mentally and at the same time, try to help others.

Today selfishness means looking to own-self and caring to own-self with everything which makes ones good and healthy.

Selfness is the self-centered attitude and the person who is involved with it have to precisely cut out in order to understand the reality situations in complete detail. Facebook, Twitter and other social media mediums are fun and the wish to share some events.

I totally agree with you. being selfish is not at all bad. Humans are capable of great selfishness and great selflessness, though most of the time humans stay in between in an area known as self- interestedness.

I feel we tend to be more self centered these days because the concept of family has changed. Previously when there we big families there used to be more interactions and adjustments inside the family. But these days that is limited. And hence people tend to be more concerned about themselves without having a second thought about the others.

Higher education, increased earning capability leads people to turn narcissistic and self centered. Probably this is what causes people to be more engrossed in themselves and turn a blind towards other peoples' needs, especially the elderly who are in a way, no longer to useful to these high-flying younger lot!

Its not about selfishness its about the own need which the trend of this world wants from a person to survive smoothly without any kind of disturbance.

selfishness is merely not a word these days it applies to people and that too to a large population. People become selfish to achieve their goals in todays world everyone wants to be on cloud9 and this increase competitiveness has made them selfish they are greedy and want to be more successful and powerful then others and this whats make them selfish. But when people will understand that we are born empty handed and we have to go also empty handed from this world so why not be satisfied and enjoy life with whatever little we have

I think now a days  people are becoming more selfish because they have become independent. They know that they can take care of themselves, and no longer need help from others. When we have such attitude we tend to become more selfish.

Before the advent of technology, people use to share their feelings with each other, families use to sit together and discuss the matter but the times have changed, now people take their own decision in the family as they are well educated, some what intelligent and confident enough to take decisions.

Even I feel that Living in a joint family help a person to be less selfish. In a joint family a person cannot always have his way. He has to think about others also. Moreover there are always someone to guide you to the right path. The elders play a very important role in instilling such moral values in their children.

Selfishness is human trait. All the humans irrespective of gender, look after their needs first.

Like anywhere else some people are more selfish than others , it is the degree of selfishness that differentiates an individual from others ..

Being selfish is one's own choice.I think I am selfish at my study and work too.Its fare to be the selfish person for your own wellbeing. But there is no place of selfishness in our own relationships.

There is saying in Telugu, that means, before anything else you think of yourself.

Selfishness is there in every sphere of life.

I hope its not your own interpretation of the Telugu proverb. If there really is such saying in Telugu, I dread to think what would become of the world if everyone take that saying seriously. It might surprise you to know that many people does many things without any selfish motive. They work for their satisfaction.

LOL...I had similar thoughts when I read the post , that it was one of rambabu's own special quotes to suit his temperament !

Selfish is human nature and its part of life. Somewhere selfish is good and somewhere its bad we need to maintain that difference to become good man.

I think desire to increase one's knowledge is nothing selfish. You get double benefit by reading as many articles as you canbikini

Exactly. Desire to read is not at all selfishness. One learns from life and books will help in improving the Society.
