14 November was the birth anniversary of India's first PM. Unfortunately he was more a philosopher than an astute leader and surrendered the Indian advantage to Mao. He had little comprehension of strategic and power politics and has left behind 2 intractable problems with China and Pakistan. In India also he sowed the seeds of disintegration with linguistic state creating myriad problems. Here was a leader greatly loved but let the people down.

I even feel that he was a mistake due to Bapu's favouritism. I feel that India needed a better leader than him in those initial years. As far as his legacy goes, we got India full of problems. We are still harvesting what he showed. It is my personal view that India would have benefited more under the leadership of Iron man. Sardar Patel would have a better choice for future of India

You are right but Patel suffered a heart attack and died. Nehru had then a free field with no opposition. He let India down.
Except Congress party most other Indians agree that Nehru as the most unsuitable and incapable PM to have had right after independence . People had a lot of hope but the blunders committed by him have been the cause of continued misery and death esp in the Kashmir valley. I am sure MG is aware of this article " The blunder of the Pandit " written by Claude Arpi an expert on Tibet and Kashmir issues ...I am posting a link to the article here .

@usha thanks for this article. So the seed of favouritism was sown in politics and favouring one due to his British education over other who was more eligible. Also it mentions that Nehru was not ready to work under Patel though Patel was ready to serve country in any post. This family carried on that legacy to be the leader with no qualification or experience. They always kept personal interest over nation.
Yes He is considered the architect of Modern India and what a masterpiece he has offered.... unresolved issues and pseudo secularism, the two factors which have paralyzed us for decades.
It is my personal view but though he loved children he left a very dubious future for them. I even doubt, looking at his life, was there anything inspiring about him that can be told to children. He got things because of his rich background and British Education. I rather feel, for modern India children's day should be celebrated on Kalam's birthday, a real lover of youth and children and an inspiration we can look for

Exactly my feelings..in fact many old timers including my father were very critical of his easy going ways and dithering ways . The word architect of the nation is coined naturally by Congress men , who else?
I feel he got a blank new slate to write history but he couldn't do so. And somehow ignorance of Indians made his family as first family of politics. His family is still cashing his legacy. Look at Priyanka Gandhi, politics has become part time job or time pass that they can do at their convenience

And everything taken care of by the tax payers including house, security and of course top earnings that are already safe in Swiss bank accounts .. With all that the arrogance of the family and the corrupt son in law ! Everything and everyone will be put in place , once, more schemes role out by the Modi govt

Gulshanji, in all things you have stated he was a total misfit almost a failure. No wonder he is rated much below other Asian leaders of 20 century.

Well said, Nehru will have a lot to answer to history.

No benefit in discussion for things which is impossible. It is better to look in present.

Yes it is better to look in present and hope for a better future. But the forum discusses about his legacy. How can be discuss legacy without going deep in past.

Especially when our present stands on a shaky foundation laid down in the past ..
