New year celebration is everywhere in the world. January 1st is a national holiday in some countries. This is the most important holiday in Japan. Each country has its own style for new year celebration. In Greece, people bake St.Basil's cake to celebrate new year. They believe that those who find that item inside of the piece of the cake will have luck in the coming year. Spanish people celebrate new year by eating a grape with each bell strike at midnight of December 31. According to the tradition, that leads to a year of prosperity. Public parties are held in towns and cities of some countries to celebrate new year.

The specialty of 2016 is it's a Leap year.

True. Depending on the different type of calendars, the New year celebrations vary . But mostly, in general, New year celebrations start, exactly at the stroke of 12 on December 31.

No we haven't forgotten our calendars. New Year according to Indian Panchangas starts on different months and dates. For example for us in AP New Year falls on Ugadi that comes in the Month of March or April depending on Leap Year. So is the case in different states.
