Regular updating is essential to be in reckoning. Outdated knowledge is of no use.

Another important aspect of learning is forgetting.  One problem with old people is that they do not forget what has become irrelevant now. This is also a handicap. You need to forget the stale and irrelevant in order to learn the new and currently relevant. You need to empty a bucket before filling in new water. same about learning.

Well said. New things should make way to outdated things. Updating of knowledge on a regular basis is the criteria.

True…. Knowledge changes with time. And the ‘bucket’ needs to be emptied.

Outdated and obsolete knowledge will make one a Butt of laughter.

Learning is a never-ending process and a life or more is not enough to come even near to the end of it. It is all about equipping ourselves with knowledge from sources as infinite and as varied as we are. But obstacles, road-blocks are too many. How about unlearning certain things before the process begins? Set ideas , mental blocks, blind spots in our minds, preconceived notions, personal prejudices and prediliction are all peppered over our path to surmount to be a true leader. As to finding a true teacher to learn from? Don't you see the one - the greatest of all - who is out there eternally - the Mother Nature?

Who is Mother Nature???? Learning is now limited to how much you scored in what subject and what kind of degree you own. My own sad experience is that engineers, even the inefficient and totally mediocre ones, are looked at with more respect than an intelligent artisan!

These are the days where merit or intelligence has become a bane. Intelligent is that person  who dances to the tunes of the establishment..

@Kalyani With all efforts to replace natural laws by unnatural ones you can't expect natural results or consequences. Our standing in the domain of global higher education bears ample testimony to the true state of affairs. You can surely flog a horse into an ass but not an ass into a horse!!

I feel that even ideasa and knowledge gets recycled like everything else in life so, there is no outdated knowledge....Each idea is relevant to to that particular time and circumstances hence is relevant and with changed times and circumstances we may see the same ideas gaining inportance once again...Of course we keep learning but also use our old knowledge as a stepping stone and keep it in the sub conscious store house perhaps for future use of it becomes necessary to do so!

@Usha You are correct. Knowledge transcends such restrictive considerations as time or any label as old or new. Even a piece of it which proved to be erroneous at a later scrutiny or date should considered of value as its existence actually spurred efforts towards perfection.

When Pablo Casals reached 95, a young reporter asked him "Mr. Casals, you are 95 and the greatest cellist that ever lived. Why do you still practice six hours a day?" Mr. Casals answered, "Because I think I'm making progress

Casals, desire to add something to his existing knowledge is what essential. The problem comes with those who are guided by the misconception that their learning has come to an and no need to add any further knowledge.

Knowledge is an ever flowing river. Old goes and new comes. Wisdom lies in grabbing the new. otherwise progress comes to a grinding halt.

Firstly Great Post,

Well Said :-"Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do". As leaning is continuous process.

Learning is that thirst that can never be satiated. The more you try to quench, more you will be thirsty.

Science says that energy cannot be created or destroyed, but can only be converted from one form to another, thus the total energy that already exists in the universe remains constant.

Similarly, it should be true that the entire knowledge the world has ever created and that are yet to come, is already there within us or within this universe; and when the time comes, we discover it and develop it into different forms for the benefit of all ??

Learning never ends and I personally enjoy learning new things and keep adding to my existing repository of knowledge.

Very true. Long ago an eminent scientist said, 'All the discoveries were discovered, and there is nothing left for discovery  '. Needless to say how the process of Discoveries continued. They will go on and on.....
