How can we improve Railway services?

There have been several suggestions from many quarters about improving Railway services.  However, not much seems to have really been done.  Whatever improvements have happened, these have not been transformed into on-time performance, increasing the speed of trains and so on.  The food that is served at the Railway Stations is just not worth the money that is being charged.

While all this is a pathetic state of affairs, what can be done?

Can we partly privatize the Railways, like for example, outsource the maintenance of toilets and all fittings to private Corporates, and give them the right to advertise in the spaces available in reserved coaches?  Or may be, request that such a thing could be part of their Corporate Social Responsibility?

Maintenance of Railway Stations may be totally privatized, and the concerned parties may provide chairs, good drinking water, ensure cleanliness and so on.

What are the other suggestions?  Please do chip in with your views.

We also lack the minimum etiquette to keep railways clean barring a few most people enjoy trash everywhere other than a dust bin.

It's lack of civic sense. Ask these people if they litter their own homes as they litter the government propert? All double standards.

All area outside one's house is treated as a dustbin to be littered anywhere.Swach ghar aswach bharat is the principle followed by majority indians.

An ailment beyond cure. deeply rooted in us.Preaching and practice are two parallel lines that never meet

But criticizing and preaching lines do intersect without any tangible results.

The entire railways system needs to be revamped. In fact now I feel short distance travels are much better by AC sleeper buses..because even when we book tickets in advance it is difficult to get confirmed tickets without the agents.

Even for long distance, I go for AC SLEEPER buses equipped with Videos. Expensive, no doubt, but comfort comes with a price tag.

However in a train one can walk, stand, sit or sleep and thus avoid sitting in one pose in a bus. This makes long journeys more comfortable in a train many times.

It's my preference. I travel frequently from Vizag to Hyderabad by AC sleeper buses. I never felt any inconvenience.

Railway is a huge network. We cannot expect immediate results. Private buses maximum contain 45 to 50 seats so maintaining them is not a mere task. If every division work for the people and people follow the rules and regulations every train journey will become a nice one. Some TTR are sitting in AC classes and did not visit the general reservation compartment. If they visit regularly then railway will earn a huge income. Most people who took unreserved ticket are travelling in reserved coaches. If the reserved person came they leave the place and find some other seat otherwise they travel in the same seat during their whole journey. Train journey is most suitable for women who carry child with them.

The reasons for declination of Railways is heavy corruption in the Railways itself. Improving Railways is a Herculean task in the present circumstances

I think it is more difficult to travel with a small child in trains, since the space for two is not enough. On the other hand buses -sleeper buses are more spacious. I think if nothing else trains should be made more spacious.

Because of the inadequacies in In the Indian Railways, the state owned and private buses are doing roaring business in the states of AP and Tamilnadu. The Railways should take a leaf out of them and provide the same facilities to the people. Only then Railways can be put on the right track.
