Should very popular film stars enter politics?

With every single passing day, there is a very heated debate going on in Tamil Nadu: will Rajnikant, the superstar of Tamil Cinema, enter politics?

Well, he hails from Maharashtra, had settled down in Bangalore, but has now lived in Chennai, for quite a long time.

He is a huge superstar of the South, with films that gross over 200 one thousand rupees, in just under one week.

Once he enters politics, many believe, Tamil Nadu will be far better.

On the one hand, the AIADMK, which is the most corrupted party of Tamil Nadu, is the ruling party.  The DMK, now in opposition, had done some really good work, but its massive corruption also made it lose the election last time.

The PMK is another very corrupt party, which as a caste base.  It is nowhere near being accepted as a mass party.  That leaves only the Congress, which has now split.  It never commands more than six per cent of the vote, anyway.

Vijayakant, who promised big, also from the film world, is widely seen as a huge drunkard, who blabbers a lot, but does very little.

So, the argument goes, if Rajnikant joins the BJP, or goes alone, he will win.

Unlike MGR, who was a huge politician and actor of the DMK, before he started the AIADMK, Rajnikant, does not have a huge fan following.

MGR was known to be a man with a really kind heart.  He had contributed to charity long before he become a legend.  His image was one that was fashioned in tune with the times -- he was seen one who could do no wrong.

Rajnikant has a larger-than life image, but this could prove his problem.  People are not used to seeing very good people from the film world, and for all the good human being that he positively is, there is nothing in him, that will take him to the masses, like MGR.

This is his big problem.

Nevertheless, should such film stars enter politics, now, which is very dirty and can pull down, anyone?

In TN in the past there are examples of movie stars entering politics, so Rajni can give it a try why not,

But you see, Rajnikant is not like MGR or even Jayalalitha.  Even Jaya thrived on the weaknesses of the DMK, but MGR had an image that was far in excess of what Rajni can ever imagine.

Moreover, he has been so busy building his image in films, but apart from his good image of a really good man, he has nothing to show.  His contribution to charity has not been much, and he has been identified as one who has made huge money, thanks to his image and the larger than life movies of his.

What will happen in politics is something that cannot be told now, but he might be in for some fresh trouble.

If unpopular politicians can continue why can not popular actors do so in politics. A popular actor with a bent of mind towards social service should give it a try.

Actually rajinikath interested in politics. He know his capacity so he hesitate and he should face several critical issues with other government. Though rajinikath is famous comparing with ajith but ajith is a good kind of person and he is doing lot of voluntary works and giving money to charities. Ajith clearly announced that he is not interested in politics and doing lot of social activities and recently he bought houses for his servants. If rajini is not interested in politics why he is not firmly saying no to politics.

Even Amitabh who is the greatest star we have today was a failure in politics, but that does not mean that film stars necessarily are worse politicians than the rest...I feel that all politicians should have some yardstick and minimum qualification no matter what background they come from !

MGR was the first star to have come in to politics, because,he was a philanthropist first. He used todistribute Raincoats to the Rickshaw pullers well before he has become a politician. Jayalalilita or to that matter, any star, who entered politics for politics sake. rajini is no exception. In this regard I respect Kamala Hasan, who stayed away from politics and never used his popularity for anything .

Yes, why not who knows if a popular actor turns out to be a good politician too

Our present PM could have been a wonderful actor. It is so impressive to see him sway crowds by masterly dialog deliveries. So a good actor who is also popular can surely go a long way in politics.

There you are. One who is good at acting and also acts. A man of actions.

Yes, Sir. It is a bit unfair to our PM.  He at least comes across as a man of action.  He does so much of hard work, and does take quick action.  Witness what he did at Vizag, after visiting some areas.

Yes, he might have acted a bit, but in this case, he is a politician who is also acting!

There is nothing wrong in acting as long as he acts and prove his provenance .

Abhinetas can become netas but rarely netas become abhinetas. What is the PM?

I agree with you. We the Indians are lucky to have a PM who "ACTS".

There is nothing wrong if a very popular star wants to enter politics. As Vijay has said, if the actor is inclined towards social service and if he believes that he can serve better through politics, then he should definitely go for it. And to your concept that politics is very dirty which can pulls down people, I am little concern with such attitude. I mean if every responsible citizen of india feel like that than who will come forward to save our nation from turning into corrupted chaostic country? I dread to think of such situation. No doubt politics at times can involve dirty bussiness but that should not deter anyone who is serious about bringing a change in the society

If somebody enters politics with a view to bring a positive change, it's welcome.

The latest trend is for actors to join politics after they are past their prime ...The trend was started first by giving an honorary represenation for the film industry by making a top film artiste a Rajya Sabha member - like Nargis Dutt was by Indira Gandhi and later down south MGR and NTR became successful politicians by contesting elections and winning and became CMs of their respective states. Now we have a whole lot of actors in different political parties and some of them are good, some average and some bad...

MGR's case is entirely different. Well before he has become a politician, he was a philanthropist . He has become politician on the strength of his philanthropic deeds, not on the popularity as a Cinema star.
