In past years most of the Indian farmers and other people were having cows at their home. Though these cows gave less milk, but the milk was very good for kids, young and old persons. Even their urine is used in making many medicines and fighting against many diseases. These were Indian (desi) cows. But as the time changed, people required more productivity, they have not cared about quality, cows from foreign countries are imported which give more milk, but the quality is not equal to the Indian cows. The number of Indian cows decreased and now a very few people have Indian cows at their home or farms.

Now there is more import and export than centuries ago becasue of betr communication and transport. The volume of production and sale of any commodity incluidng milk depends on market forces viz. demand and supply. As for the plea that India cow milk yield was less but good for kids and other benefits, our increasing ppulation is a fact that cannot be ignored. Now our population is more than 100 crore and we need more quantity of everything lest we starve. Green revolution saved us from food shortage. Now there is more use of Amul tinned milk for babies rather than fresh cow milk. Now people seek jobs in factories and commercial establishments and have no space or time or even energy to keep cows at home. Incidentally, buffalo milk is more in demand.

First of all for keeping a cow at your place you need to own a house, which is spacious enough to accommodate a cow. Secondly, taking care of a cow is not an easy task. More and more people have switched to consuming tonned milk (cow/buffalo) so there is not point in keeping a cow when the tonned milk supply is good enough. Cow's milk which is not pasteurized contains harmful bacteria, if consumed can pose health issues and cause more harm than good. Owing to adulteration of milk these days consumption of the same is best avoided directly from a cow.

Can you be specific as to what is the difference in the quality of milk between the Indian and imported cow ?
The milk of Indian cow is treated as very good for health. Many researches are going on the milk and urine of Indian cow. You may know that urine of Indian cow is used in curing many diseases. Baba Ramdev have many times explained about the good uses of milk and urine of Indian cow. The curd and Ghee from the milk of Indian cow is also beneficial in many ways. Some ayurvedic medicines squired Desi cow ghee and milk for the proper treatment in certain disease. The cows that are imported from foreign countries are only milk producing machines nothing else. As compared to Indian cow give only 8-10 liters of milk whereas foreign cows give up to 20-25 liters of milk for the same diet. So you can compare which product is better at same diet 20 liters of milk or 10 liters of milk.
I am vegetarian and love milk related products apart from green vegetables, in my town, milk related products from black cow, is preferred.
The white cow milk is preferred than the black cow milk. But the white cow milk is not easily available because very few people have white cows at their farm or dairy, whereas the black cow milk is available in every city or town as in most of dairies today there are lots of black cows.

When it comes to nutritional value and the medicinal values of urine are concerned, both Indian and foreign breeds of cows are same. Milk yield depends on the quality of the fodder. Not on the breeds . Here ordinary Indian breeds are also giving high yield.
If Amul had relied only on Indian cows there would have been no milk revolution in the country. Today India is no 1 milk producer in the world and there is still milk shortage in the country. Aml has successfully cross bred the famous Jersey cows with Indian cows and increased the milk yield of Indian cows. It is laughable that the colour of the cow has a bearing on the taste of the milk it gives. Besides it is buffalo milk which is widely consumed.

I can't help laughing at what you said which is very true...how can color of a cow be a determining factor of good taste and quality of milk.

As myths and beliefs go there are many who believe it. Even educated persons believe it.
We have more number of educated illiterates : . A doctor waited for an auspicious moment to admit in to hospital his own father with a serious ailment. Only to see the old chap breathe his last.

I agree with you that it is quite absurd to assume that the colour of a cow has a bearing on the quality of its milk. But from my point of view, whatever the difference may or may not exist in the quality of milk or whatever, from ecological point of view, it is important to preserve original Indian species of the cow. Any animal which is indigenous to a region is an important member of the region's ecosystem and hence deserves to be preserved. You mentioned the experiments of cross breeding it with the Jersey cows, how successful was it? It could have been but it is equally important to preserve the original species too.

It happened in the hospital meant for employees of a steel major in Visakhapatnam. I worked in this organization and was editing the house magazine. I myself published this news item in the house journal.

By cross breeding the dairy has been able to develop a more sturdy and healthy breed of cows whose yield of milk has gone up significantly. It is because of this increase in productivity that India is today no. 1 milk producer and still milk shortage is there because of rising population and demand. Similarly in agriculture also Mexican dwarf wheat variety was crossed with Indian varieties and the result was a considerable boost in productivity as a result of which the India today is an exporter of food grains when in 1960's we were forced to import from USA to feed our population. It is the story of Green Revolution. The local varieties continue to exist and samples are in fact preserved by scientific laboratories.
