It's a revelation.very few people know about the negative side of Tree plantation. Indiscriminate planting of saplings without taking in to consideration, the place and the surroundings will prove counterproductive .A thought provoking article.
Many years back an Australian tree had become the darling of government sponsored tree plantation programs. It grew very fast and thus could be seen as proof of program success. Soon it was observed that the water table in such areas went down because it drew lot os water to grow fast. In fact it was labeled as an evaporator. Also it hardly grew more than 6-7 inches in diameter. It thus had no use except for being used in scaffolding s in construction industry. After a few years it was no longer planted. it was not native to India and was not planted scientifically.
In flats and narrow places where saplings are planted, over a period damage the walls causing fatal accidents and wall collapses.
The pressure of space for human settlements has led to trees being cut in lakhs all over the country. Today in many cities heat is reflected by the concrete tall buildings and monsoon water has no place to go over concrete surfaces. In city planning a balance needs to be made between buildings and trees.

Urban planning is in a primitive stage now. Our planners should wake up.

Urban planning in India is digging and more digging and more digging and still more digging throughout the year every year. All planning is underground.

Yes, those were eucalytptus trees which depleted our natural water tables severely but now many organisations have woken up and are researching a lot before planting trees. Near my place there is a hill range where an organisation has undertaken the task of covering the range with indigenous trees along with other hills in Pune. Since last 3 years they have planted almost 20,000 trees that are endemic to Pune region and these people regularly take care of the saplings in shifts. They have especially taken care to plant only those trees which grow naturally in this area. This type of awareness is now increasing.
Few voluntary non profit organizations are doing yeomen service in boosting the awareness on importance of tree plantation. They not only supply free saplings, see the suitability of the plant to the soil conditions and surroundings of your residential area. It's not all. they monitor the growth of the plant on regular basis. Offer suggestions and hold regular seminars on importance of planting in educational institutions.
In my native place, I do not know the english name of tree but people used to plant it apart from coconut due to sea side town, and the first plant they do is to stop the storm as they can break the force of wind considerably.
For every tree there are some ideal conditions for its growth depending upon the space, soil and geographical conditions. These essential aspects are to be taken in to consideration before planting a sapling. The ideal thing would be to consult a nursery or some voluntary organizations which advise you about all necessary information not only for healthy growth of the plant but also the risks involved.
Down south growing coconut trees is considered to be normal and mandatory in every household and these can be very dangerous when they are grown by the side of the road and coconus if and when not plucked on time can fall on passers .This has hapened so many times in my neighborhood and in my own house we had to cut two trees because finding coconut pluckers has become a very difficult task now...

Here is my own example. Just by the boundary wall separating the neighboring flat and mine two coconut trees were planted. Now both the coconut trees spread its roots deep in to the wall and its surroundings breaking the boundary wall. Now there is a tussle between the two flats on who is going to build the wall.
In northern odisha there is trend about creating a big garden in front of house.
The practice of creating a garden in front of the house is prevalent almost everywhere .
If one gets to travel in rural India especially in UP/Bihar one can see native trees of very wide girth and a large foliage covering really large circular area. They look massive and ancient. In cities because of congestion straight growing trees like pendula are grown.

Fortunately in Southern India the trees which are quite old were kept untouched. In Bangalore which is aptly named as the city of Gardens the Authorities took lot of care to keep the Trees in their original beauty.
Planting of trees not only deflect sun shine and imparts coolness but also brings back smile to earth due to preservation of ecological balance.
There is a system and method for planting of trees to reap the fruits of plantation. The thread enlists a series of DOs and DONTS for plantation. Unless they are followed, there is no use of mere plantation.

We had a similar problem a few years ago with a massive jackfruit tree which was in our compound close to the border but was claimed to be theirs by our neighbors because of the value it has. Anyway their case was dismissed and we cut the tree and built a wall...either way trees too can cause too many complications when they are planted without forethought !
