Books are the cheapest way to acquire knowledge and spread knowledge. Whatever may be the technological development like E Books etc, nothing can beat a printed book.
They say " Book lovers never go to bed alone. "

Books since ages have been our best friends and will continue to remain, no matter how far the technology and scientific inventions take us.

I cannot imagine reading "Bhagat Geeta" in a E book format that strains my eyes and cause neck pain. The pleasure of reading a book in a reclining state lying on my bed in the comforts of my Home is altogether a different proposition.
For me book in electronic form is also a book. Whether you read on computer or in book form, this is all a matter of convenience.

It really is shocking that there are so many who cannot read and are robbed of the knowledge and pleasures one derives from books ! unless parents and teachers make it a point to introduce children to books at an early stage this trend will only worsen ..

I agree. Reading book as described by you has joy of its own.

Reading should be an enjoyable affair. If your eyes water and back pains, the very purpose of Reading will be defeated.

It is definitely upto the parents to take efforts to inculcate reading habits in their children. All I see is many parents who buy books for their children but expect the children to read themselves, which is so silly. Small children will not be able to read for long on their own. Parents have to take time out to sit with their children and read with them. For the last three years I spent 2-3 hours each afternoon reading out stories to my son, now he is 5 and a half years exactly, and he has already started reading on his own. In fact he himself selected a few Dr. Seuss books online and we got them last month. Mostly he reads by himself, but sometimes he wants me to read them. Whenever he does, I keep all my work aside and sit with him. If I ignored him then, he would lose interest in reading. So it is upto parents mostly, is what I feel!

Yes Kalyani, once the reading habit has formed it will be for lifetime and I am sure your son will benefit tremendously from this ....it used to be the same with me, I made it a point to tell them stories at bedtime and also read with my children. They wanted me to act out certain stories with animal sounds lol, and we enjoyed it together...Today all three of them are voracious readers and we discuss books when we are together !

It was different case with me. I got lured by the attractive pictures on the cover pages of Books in my Father's vast Book shelf.. My father asked me one day seeing my interest, "If you want to know the story behind the Cover pages, you should read the book." This has ignited my appetite for Books. This starting made me a voracious reader and at the same time an Artist.
Importance attached with book is still to day, in the age of kindle and Google books where everyting seems to be electronic but the satsifaction in reading book in immense and can not be expressed. It is a pity to learn so many children are devoid of basic educational standards, many a times constriants of livelihood is complelling parents to send their children to work.

I really wonder how you read book while travelling. If I read a book while traveling, I shall even forget to get down from the bus or train when destination arrives.

All the conductors of the buses in which I travel frequently are aware of my reading habit and they alert me when my stop comes. In new routes, i request the conductor to alert me when my destination comes.

Again the vehicular movement does not allow me to read. I get headache if I read in moving vehicle. However, it is okay while travelling by train.

Its a question of habit. If I don't read during my Bus journeys , I feel restless and monotonous. During this period i do not know when my destination comes until the conductor alerts me..

You have rightly said that often poor parents are compelled to send their children to earn money instead of going to school. That's why it is a matter of big concern that such a large number of people still do not know how to read. I would not be surprised if many of these people turn out to be poor.

It is however true that the general trend in reading books seems to have reduced with ebooks and internet facilities available. Usha has rightly mentioned that parents and teachers need to take greater responsibility in inculcating the habit of reading in children. They could play a big role in generating their interest in reading books. I have met many parents who keep buying books for children but only those kinds of books which they feel would add knowledge or would be useful for their career. They would not buy them story books, comics or something of their interest etc. In such cases, the children are not likely to enjoy reading books at later stage. I also notice that many of the parents are too busy with their career that they themselves do not take out time to read something for themselves. So, not having ever seen their parents reading, many of the children do not get to understand the pleasure of reading.

Poverty is not the sole reason for lack of Book reading habit in the children. There are many rich people who could not inject the Book reading habit in their children. The reason is lack of milieu or a social environment that surrounds the child. i have seen many poor children who moved and associated themselves with Reading ATMOSPHERE have become voracious readers.
