Geeta Dutt was a beautiful lady with a sensational voice . She was born today iin the year 1930....She was born in Faridpur a place which is now in Bangladesh and was one of the leading playback singers of the hindi film industry during the fifties and sixties...She met, fell in love and married the great film maker Guru Dutt .
Personally, I am a great fan of her voice and songs and am saddened by the tragic life she lead. This eventually made her an alcoholic and was the root cause of her early demise. However there are no two opinions about the fact that Geeta was an extremely talented singer who will be remembered along with other greats like Lata Mangeshkar,Asha Bhosle, Mohammad Rafi ,Kishore Kumar,Manna dey and others..

Geeta Dutt is one of the most talented singers. She had such a charming voice. Some of her songs which I never get tired of listening are ay dil mujhe bata de tu, waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam, babuji dheere chalna, jaane kahaa mera jigar gaya ji.
Very true Jabeen, because of her voice she was able to carve a special place for herself inspite of having stiff competetion from Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle ! Once Guru dutt died she lost a will to live and went on destroying herself with drinks and drugs which lead to a very tragic end !
What a range of her singing prowess!!!

I too felt the same. And their voices cannot be imitated. I have seen musical programmes, where in there are good singers who exactly imitate Lata, Asha, Rafi, Kishore etc. but not Geeta Dutt.

Wife of OP was a lyric writer. She wrote the famous song, ' preetam aan milo' , sung by Ch. Atma. The same song was sung by Geeta dutt later in Mr & Mrs 55.
After reading this forum, I collected some hits songs of Geeta Dutt, and surprised to find a beautiful voice and in some songs she sang more beautifully, by lataji.
That is great ! You can get almost all her songs on youtube and now there are softwares to convert the videos into MP3 files so one can cllect as many songs as possible... :)

The addiction to liquor and drugs dates back to Saigal's days in Indian filmdom.. Luminaries in any field in a bid to measure up to the expectations of their fans fall victims of depression. Geeta Dutt had a different voice, more like Noorjahan because most female singers coming from Punjab were used to Soofi style. Once a Pakistani asked me 'why you female singers are so different and sound like Lata' but when he heard some others like Geeta, Kappor he had the real idea. Of course Usha Aiyyar is doing a great job. Geeta perhaps was at her best when she sang for Madhubala.
