Definitely, Indira Gandhi was a great leader. Dev Kant Barua had spoken in parliament- Indira is India and India is Indira. This statement is considered as height of sycophancy. Proclamation of emergency is a blot on her. She declared emergency not for some public cause but only consequent on Allahabad High Court setting aside her election as member of parliament for using corrupt means.

Yes Barua's description of Indira Gandhi was ridiculed in those days. And the reasons behind declaration of emergency are well known which has become a hot topic for discussion for many years.

No doubt, she could take great risks. Once she was reduced to minority and her government worked with support of about twenty four communist M.P.s only. She decided to dissolve Lok Sabha and hold fresh elections that gave her two third majority. Now nobody will take such risk. You take risk only when you have self confidence.

Her dignity and decorum in speech and behavior can not be matched by the present day aspirants of the PM chair.
