best way to deal with office politics is listen others, need not speak, no backbitting and concentrate on work :)
Asha, there are several ways to deal with office politics depending on what levels it is happening at. If it is happening at your subordinate level, then you need to ask some serious questions to those involved. At your own level, you should try to ignore and concentrate on your own work and try not to get pulled up in what others are doing BUT at the same time, you also should make sure that you let your immediate boss know what is happening, without revealing too many details or it may alienate you from your colleagues, but just the general feeling. And always make sure that you do not become a part of it all.

It's very much part of the office -office game. You cannot stay away from it. Tackle it as it comes your way. One by one, case and merit based. Besides it depends on your status in office, if you are someone in there, you face lesser and differently but for juniors it is always a mind-game to be played very carefully. Avoiding helps but to a reasonable limit.

Like a droplet of water on a lotus leaf, be away to save yourself from the silly office politics. If you are really an employee which contribute to the growth of the organisation no politics will dare to come anywhere near you.
First and foremost one should always play one's card securely. There are times when the jealous colleagues can try hard to fall prey to any such frauds so try hard to minimize this and also try to keep prying eyes on every persons.

There is a saying. "The stick should not break and the snake should not die." Follow this norm if you want to have peace of mind.

I agree, even the best can dance to the tune of jealous and influential, some of the best have sought refuse in switching over.
Politics in office cannot be avoided such as devilish bosses, annoying subordinates and jealous peers. blow your horn occasionally, profile powerful workers and communicate per suavely.
Oh talk of the bad bosses, when it comes to getting credit, he is the only one in the company that works. He uses his power to frighten the juniors or when he is working with you, he will be trying to stab you in the back. You got to be prepared for all his ill designs.

As you said one should be prepared for such conditions. If you are not prepared EXIT.
One should do the job and also maintain cordial relation with all in a non partisan way. Personally, I faced such situation at many places.

Vertical structure of office is what worries the most, instead one should opt for horizontal office hierarchy, in which there would not be competitive advantages to any one as such.
when people are working for an organization, its essential to maintain good relations irrespective of the structure of the organization.

Social groups and interpersonal relationships must be addressed while considering the structure of organization. This will give birth to the human relationship movement in organization.

If you are sincere and the best around in your trade, no tricks will work. No politics will work. You will remain unaffected
Office politics is very bad. I would say that one should concentrate more on work. He/she should keep good relations with the boss. It is the boss who promotes you. If boss is himself part of conspiracy, it is better to do the job else where.
Everything depends on the person concerned. Nobody is going to force you to be a part of politics in the office or elsewhere. Above all if the person concerned proves his worth in helping the organisation develop, nobody, even god can do any harm to that person.
Some times some external pressures from public compelled one to do not so correct work, and if not there can be chances of public rage against you and this is more when we have seen Gurgaon one year back inside Maurti, when executive was burnt down for not doing illegal work by laborer. Countless example is there.
