No doubt the recent gang rape has shamed Mumbai. Hut before that unfortunate incident, everyone believed that Mumbai is safe. There is a proverb- single swallow does not make summer. A single bad incident cannot change the entire environment. There is need to check crime against women but there need not be too much despair and gloom.
Cities have nothing to do with it ,it is the people who spoil things . To a certain extent I agree with what Shivsena said about outsiders being the cause of increased crime rates. It is because of annonimity more than anything else.I see this happening in a small place like ours as well where we have migrant workers from other states . Most of the crimes have been committed by them because the locals are known by sight and dont want their reputation to get tarnished...so one can imagine how it is in larget cities where one can easily vanish in the crowds...

This is very true! Majority of the rape cases that have been reported in cities like Mumbai, Pune, Kolhapur and surrounding areas, more than 75% of the perpetrators were from outside the state came to work as labourers! it is very much the anonymity they acquire since they move around a lot for work purposes and manage to get away!

Even in Delhi rape case, the accused were from other places. Those from other places also do not have to bother about their reputation as they do not belong to the city. This fact should also make people more conscious and careful about strangers and outsiders.

Exactly Kalyani ! Here in Mangalore we had a theft where the three workers beat up the woman and a child of 7 years and took away cash, jewlery and other stuff and have never been caught because they have gone back to where they came from and had given wrong address to tgeir employers in Mangalore...
I don't think this particular incident, though terrible, is not going to make much of difference to overall perception of Mumbai as I have had personal experiences of this city being a cosmopolitan one receiving all kinds of people from all over the country with women moving freely even in late night. Surely, this incident should be an eye-opener to the state administration. Honestly, the state of affairs of the national capital, New Delhi which I had the opportunity to acquaint myself with, is far worse.

The country is in such a pitiful situation, no safety for women even in the most secured place and even in day time. The rape has occurred in the midnight and that too in an isolated place. Prevention is better than cure. Women should avoid going alone to such places in midnight .

Yes, most of the offenders in big cities are from floating population. They have the advantage of committing the crime and leave with out leaving a clue. The recent gang rape is an exception. All the culprits live in Mumbai.
We have had just one rape case in the entire district, in Manipal which is known as a university town since it is filled it colleges for almost all subjects and also the KMC hospital where a lot of outsiders come for treatment. The girl was from Kerala and was raped at night by two Rickshaw drivers who were caught because of the assistance given by the Rickshaw union...The two rapist drivers later confessed that they were drinking with a person from another state who was working in a fast food shop there and he instigated them to rape a girl and he himself although was present during that time had later left the place and gone back to his town. When the police tried to locate him, they were unable to do so, because he had given a fictitious address...

But is this rite to blame a particular set of people. Its all about the individual who is commiting the crime. Why blaming whole community or place for the same. All kind of people live every where.. its that person only who is responsible.

An outsider has an advantage. He has fewer relatives or friends and so he can be more careless about his prestige. A local has to think many times before spoiling his reputation. This is not only about sexual assault. You may even eat from any placew in another city but at your own place even in this you mat think of dignity.

Yes this girl is brave one. If we want to improve system than we should be come forward. I read that two pickpockets tryied to snatch purse of one TV star. When so oppose they beat her. At that time peoples only enjoyed it and no one come forward to help her. This attitude encourging unsocial elements.
