Do we need acts like Food security bill for giving adequate food ration to economically weaker section. Is the tactic of enabling people earn by enhanced skill, fixing minimum need based wages to all, stressing on right and duty to work rather than food not more logical.

Do we need an act to safeguard our resources including food grains. Some time back, apex court had directed government to distribute surplus ration among poor instead of allowing this to deteriorate. Government did not act then.

The proposed food security bill that has been introduced by ordnance route is expected to give ration to poor at subsidized rate. In fact, some state governments are already doing that. Is this move not more an election strategy than real desire to feed the poor.

Without an iota of doubt, its an election steategy.
The main problem remains that of the execution of the schemes. In spite of producing enough food we have malnutrition prevailing in the country, will the bill help eradicate it? One good thing the food security bill has brought in is the number of vacancies in the FCI.

It is noting more than election strategy. In last election congress won on the basis of MAHANAREGA. Every one know outcome of this plan.
Everything is done to grab the floating votes, nothing more :(

Once the elections are over, this act also dies a natural death like many such acts.

Although the ordnance is for election gains, once some measure is initiated, there are long term affects. MANERGA is also giving benefits to many despite shortcomings. Let us hope that Food security bill will benefit people.
They keep suckng for four years and suddenly begin with freebies in fifth, the election year. Probably this is indirect form of bribing poor people in particular to catch their votes. This should be banned with immediate effect.

To make Indians doodle, drone, lazy, so they always vote to a party who give them free food. In coming days government may be provide clothes, accomodation. wine and tobacco all free. Vote once in five year and Khao Pio Ash Karo"

True! During the beginning of current term, it was declared that the ordinance would be passed within 100 days of their coming in to power but even after 4 years passed nothing was done. Now that the elections are just around the corner, there is an increased speed to get it passed, no one is a fool enough not to think of the obvious reasons.

Some share of delay in passing the bill goes to the opposition who wastes more time in shouting, obstructing and boycotting parliament.

That also is true, everyone, the ones in opposition and the ones in ruling party all resort to same techniques. But still there was a marked lack of willingness to do so on part of the ruling party too. That fact cannot be avoided.
Is food security bill biggest mistake since independence. Author of following link thinks so. He also visualizes how India would be if Lal Bahadur shastri had not died at Tashkent and lived as P.M. for a few more years.

Somebody aptly said its "Vote security " bill. Its going to burden the states heavily. Where are the godowns to accommodate the food grains. States need 6 lakh tons capacity godowns. Who will bear the cost ? Our PDS is very weak and centers of corruption. Who will reform them ? There are many questions to be answered for which there are no answers with the law enforcers. A clear cut election stunt.

Every one knows the answer, they do not have sacks to keep grain and you are talking about storage places! They do every thing on paper right from purchasing to distribution. They make advance arrangements for money making.

While the state governments are shedding sweat to procure the resources, Rulers will be issuing press statement after press statement with stale metaphors like, Its unprecedented historical and a mile stone. And their faithful followers clap in the parliament. Who this government is trying to fool ?
It is nothing but an election strategy by the congress party. In todays newspaper top economists have spoken about the dangers of having such a scheme...I guess if UPA comes back to power we will see the economy in doldrums and the rupee probably at 100 to a dollar !
"Food bill adds to the market indigestion" says the new Indian express. This programme which aims to provide food grains to 82 crore people ahead of elections would add Rs. 25000 crores annually. Won't it be tough for the Finance ministry to curb the fiscal deficit ?
I could hope that the food security bill should cover 100 percentages of Indians, rich, middle, and poor, as right to food is the motto of this bill, then it should cover all citizens of this great country, I could hope in the later years this scheme should cover all the rich, higher middle class people. For this every citizen should vote, whenever gets the opportunity so that all parties will vouch for their right. :cheer:

I don't think food security bill can be covered for the entire population of India in the present scenario of economic turbulence.
