Satyajit Ray was born in Calcutta on 2nd May 1921. His father, Sukumar Ray was an eminent poet and writer in the history of Bengali literature. In 1940, after receiving his degree in science and economics from Calcutta University he attended Tagore's Viswa-Bharati University. His first movie Pather Panchali won several International Awards and set Ray as a world-class director.

A befitting honor to one of our rarest geniuses by Google! He was not only a great film-maker - a very popular literary figure too.

Although his debut film 'Pather Panchali' made history and still remains one of the defining moments of Indian cinema which incidentally has been celebrating its centenary year, I find his other films - no less memorable. 'Jalshaghar', 'Nayak' are my great favorites. What about his children film 'Goopyee Gayen Bagha Bayen which was based on his grandfather's children fantasy??

Indian by birth. Universal by virtue.
Satyajit Ray was an artistic yet relaistic film maker. I remember a scene from his Pather Panchali where the old lady is eating rice sitting on the floor and the scene where it rains, water dripping down from the leaves and flowers - Bimal Roy used this kind of nature photography a lot in his films..

Such was the prowess of the film maestro that casting the right actors for roles of so many of his films was always incredibly perfect. Late Chuni Bala Dasi about whom you mentioned, acted as a"Yatra" artist long way back and she absolutely had no contact with demands of acting in films but her performance in that celebrated film won her universal accolades!!

Absolutely ! Most present day film makers tend to think that the more noise and more special effects the more impact - may be to a certain extent , but what ultimately matters is the directors vision and how best he could portray it and Satyajit Ray's films were mostly black and white but what an impact !

When I watched this masterpiece as a very young boy, the scene which moved me to inconsolable grief and bursting into tears to the fruitless efforts of all to console me, was Harihar's return to home and his most natural reaction to his daughter Durga's death!!! Whenever I get to see this scene, my reactions almost remain the same!! The magic of the maestro!!! Here I have to add a few sentences more. Satyajit Roy embarked himself upon a track which was completely different from the dominant tenor of Bollywood. Once late Nargis rather shockingly described Satyajit Roy as a 'peddler' of poverty on the floor of Parliament. One has to understand the perspective under which such silly comments are made. A film is not all about fantasy and entertainment. If it is divorced from reality and life its appeal would last not more than a few years. The fact that 'Pather Panchali' stills remains a masterpiece or a classic owes to its timeless truth!!!
But the tragedy is One another bengali film maker Rituporno Ghosh died who was also treated as much as popular like Satyajit Ray.
Personally I would say that Rituparno Ghosh was good but he had no time to make great films like Satyajit Ray did since he was relatively younger....But all said and done, had he lived, he would have become a really great film maker if he had continued making committed films like the ones he had done so far !
