It depends. I know many stories happening the other way, mothers -in -law harassed by daughters-in- law

It happens from both sides. Some are suppressed and some are exaggerated.

The relation between a mother in law and her daughter in law is not a blood relation. This comes in existence consequent on marriage of her son. It is natural that there is not proper mutual understanding in the beginning. some get mutual understanding later than others. Whether daughter in law is harassed or she is source of fear depends on who is more dominant. .

Friendship is neither blood relation nor created by marriage. This depends on mutual understanding. This is developed. Friendship is between two individuals whereas relation by marriage connects two families. Possibly, husband and wife have prior mutual understanding. But this may not be so between mother in law and her daughter in law.

The domestic atmosphere depends on the women of the house. If she was peace then everything will be fine. Everybody will live happily. It is their choice and mentality.

Some daughter inlaws also harrasing mother in laws. It is happening. They think everything earned by her husband is her only.
