Ship is not drived by any one, But the head is called Captain.
Captain is the correct answer. Ship is headed by a captain.
I dont know where i did a mistake. anyways captain is the incharge of the crew . He does'nt drive the ship.Who steers the ship i heard it is called helmsman but not too sure. I my self need the answer.

Aeroplane can also be written as airplane. the mistake i made is to write pilot i wrote pilate. its may be due to pronunciation i pronounce

I think this is the reason why the term 'at helms of affairs' is used for key persons who direct a company or any organization.

That is right - The phrase ' At the helms of the affairs of a big project or any thing big came out of the same term, thanks for bringing it here.

Hi sharon, The term helmsman is old when ships were not sophisticated and were comparitively smaller. But now the ships are very large, average cargo carriers have nothing less than 16,000 tonnes or more capacity and large oil tankers are in the range of 100,000 tonnes and more...So, it is not possible to have a 'driver' for a ship....
There is a whole team working on the ship divided into deck side and engine side- The deck side consists of people on the bridge keeping watch and sending signals to the engineers in the engine room who are below the sea level in the engine room.
The deck side is managed by a team of deck side officers who have Captain as the head of the team and the engineers team has Chief Engineer as the head and both are as important and needed to run a ship, along with a radio officer who is also part of the team...
In that case let's put it this way, that a team of second officers are responsible to navigate a ship and the captain of the ship at the helms of the affairs. Yes that is true the smaller ships of olden days or still available in backwaters are controlled by helmsmen.
Now both Captain and Chief Engineer has equal status as regards pay structure and responsibilities are concerned, and all registered ships have the same structure where there is a captain and an engineer and their respective teams .Since old ships are scrapped after they reach a certain age , the only vessels that are around and function now have to have a certain standard otherwise they dont get a licence...

Ram, any kind of vehicles, airplane, train or whatever are never 'drived' they are 'driven' hope you get my drift!!
I hope you read this and correct your own post!

I always thought that in general terms, the ones who piloted the ship were called sailors and if we go into all those details, we have the B'sun or Bosun, the navigating officer, petty officer etc.

Yes KLalyani, :) the general term used is sailor for anyone who is working on a ship. but there is a hierarchy there. There are so many different departments, an electrician, purser etc ..Bosun is very well known since he is the chief deck hand ..the deck or the navigating officers and the engineers are different and the ship's crew are different
Sometimes the small ship drivers are called Captain. Otherwise pilot is always true for all drivers.
In case of a big ship, many people are required to sail the ship. Thus different designations are given to them according to the work they do, as what Kalyaniji has mentioned in the above post. Hence We cannot call the driveres by single name.
In case of a computerised ships, it is sailed automatically just bet pressing few buttons. Those ships are not in India.
