Modern means new or updated but modish means fashionable cloth.
So far as I understand, both mean the same. So is there a catch somewhere here that we are supposed to decipher???

You bet it is..... :)
Modern mean which is a latest thing which contain modernity and modish is the daily life style
Modern is in mind for the sake of advancement while modish is for showoff.
I like to be Modern not from outside, but from inside my heart and mind.

Great answer! You have brought out the essence of it very nicely. Actually it is a derogatory term for pseudo modern! Good!

No hard work! If you make sentences with both, the difference would be obvious. For example if you write 'a person with a modern outlook' then replace 'modern' with 'modish',he would be outright offended!
