The Union Cabinet has decided to amend the law for giving death sentence to the plane hijackers. This is a welcome step. A plane hijacker is a terrorist and worse than killer. What are members' comments?

it is very good action taken by the union cabinet
I really appreciate this one.
According to Indian Judiciary, death sentence is given only at the unavoidable cases..
So, don't know whether this will become a law..

Anyway, if the punishment is hard, then people will stop them from committing the crime..
Jobin- Presently, death sentence is for murder and treachery to nation. Usually, life imprisonment is given for murder. In cases of murder in very heinous way, the case being rares of the rare, death sentence is given. The death sentence is not owing to judiciary. This is according to Indian Penal code. The parliament can change law so as to award death sentence for hijacking of planes.
There is no doubt that the move is a pragmatic and welcome decision but the point is that the whole process is so slow and at times frustrating.
chinmoymukherjee- I agree that the whole process is slow. While some delay is inherent in a democratic set up, steps should be taken to reduce time in legal process. Justice delayed is justice denied. Justice includes punishment. So delayed punishment encourages criminals. Suppose that some one committed crime at the age of thirty and is jailed at the age of seventy, it is no use. He might even die before reaching seventy.
@Gulshaan

You have made a cogent point and I fully agree with it.Even the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court at various fora expressed his concern at the judicial sloth but the ground situation has harldly looked up and this emboldening the criminals to commit further crimes.
its good.....we should implement some tough measure. This is one of them.
I agree that strict punishment is required to decrease the rate of committing crimes..
