Heartiest greetings on the festival. Also thank you for the information. But I don't understand what 'Pooram' means.
Pooram actually is one among those 27 stars.
On the pooram day of Medam month, this festival is celebrated.....but most occassions it comes on Makam star(this year also).
It is the most celebrated festival of Kerala....grand of all the temples here.
I will give description tomorrow(have given some days before in some other thread also).
Today I saw Thrissur pooram, for the first time in my life. Will upload some photos..tomorrow
Just go through wikipedia link to know about Pooram in a brief
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thrissur_Pooram
I am posting some of the pictures taken by me.....
At first let me say a few words....
Vadakkumnathan is the most famous Shiva temple of Kerala, no doubt. Thrissur pooram is known as the festival of festivals...greatest of all festivals in Kerala ( celebrations in a temple) and its highlights is of course, elephants.
It's a combination of 3 temples....Vadakkumnathan......Paaramekkaavu(Devi temple) and Thiruvambady Krishna temple....so union of 3 powerful deities of hindu mythology
This photo (also following) are taken day before yesterday......by me
Vadakkumnathan temple has 4 doors.....through which we can enter. This is one of them

You can see Om namah sivah written on it in malayalam

I am now posting pictures..
This one of pooraparambu(ground) just before the pooram....
I was able to take photos since it was not a big crowd
{CJATTACHMENT ["id": 7046]}
Then we have to quit the main ground and come to main road leading to temple...due to rush...also can't see anything from there
{CJATTACHMENT ["id": 7049]}
This picture was taken when first group came out of temple and stand in a row, facing the crowd. The centre elephant carries the statue(thidambu) of Paramekkavu Bhagavathy temple
{CJATTACHMENT ["id": 7048]}
This one taken when the second group came from Krishna temple, standing opposite their rivals.... In between them also, there is huge crowd, accompanied by panchavadyam(5 instruments) people.
Competition is between these two groups
Sorry...i was far away...so could add these photos only :(

Then famous Kudamattam(changing umbrellas) start..which is the main competition and attraction of the event...where I think, more than 50, 75 types of umbrellas are displayed by either group.
When one group shows a particular type and colour, the other should show something that excels the first.
Then turn reverses....
This event occurs more than 2 hours..changing many types, colours of umbrellas.
I am sharing 2 photos.....
You can see in distance, two colour umbrellas....each type in each group.
{CJATTACHMENT ["id": 7050]}
{CJATTACHMENT ["id": 7051]}
In the second photo, you can clearly see, one row with red umbrellas and the other one with green.
elephants are standing face to face.....though can't clearly seen in my photo...
See the first picture of the thread
