Sharad Pawar favors non political President. Is this not funny. President performs political functions. Why should the incumbent be non political?
If so, why not non political ministers, parliamentarians and legislators?

Ya you are true suni when high command gives permission then no one is there to oppose the permission.........
This is right. There has to be somebody to decide finally. This is so in office, business, family. But the authority decides after seeing all aspects and hearing various opinions.
No doubt, some decision will be taken soon as time is short.
Ya Government has to make some rule who keep the power of opposing the permission of High command...
High command is an organ of political party. Government does not control political parties. However, every political party should have a party constitution and internal democracy ensured. A copy of party constitution is filed with chief election commissioner. Election commission also does not interfere with functioning of party. This is internal matter like family. If there is some dispute in your family and mom gives authority to dad to take a decision, anybody outside family or police cannot interfere. This is so with political party also.
Pranab Mukherjee is most likely to be UPA nominee. apparently after discussion and getting consent of allies including Trinmool, Pranab Mukherjee will be the candidate.
President's role will be very significant if no party or alliance gets a majority in next parliamentary elections in 2014. Pranab Mumkherjee is very much political. There appears no scope for non political president at this juncture.

That was what I was trying to say in every post. Either we should come to terms or we should forget democratic norms at every level. There should be a different way to choose a president for this country, a little more democratic. Ruling party always has its final say in this matter, especially so while at the verge of an indefinite future.

Presently, President is elected by elected members of parliament and state legislature. The voting is by secret ballot. So, the process is democratic. As the ruling party has majority in electoral college consisting of elected members of Lok sabha, Rajya Sabha, Visdhan sabha of all states, obviously ruling party nominee will be elected. This is entirely democratic process. After all, democracy means rule by majority.
The Congress Party seems to be in tied in all kinds of knots over its choice. The Party is looking for a 'safe' candidate who can take care of its interests in the scenario emerging after 2014 Parliamentary elections!
BJP or NDA may not agree to congress choice of 'safe' candidate for obvious reason. So, there may be a tough Presidential election.

I suppose he means not affiliated to any other party except his own  .Presidents have been rubber stamps used by the party at the central ladership, so there can never be a president who is non political...

Okay. President job is political one and so the incumbent has to be politicians. As regards rubber stamp president, this is because as long as the government enjoys majority, President can act only on advice of union cabinet and not otherwise. But President has a greater role when no party or alliance has visibly clear majority. Such situation may arise after next Lok Sabha elections. Then President's role will be crucial. That is why Congress/ UPA want a President, safe for them.

Congress party has always believed in power games, and NDA not as experienced as the Congress party in such political games is also edging towards the same...I am sure that finally it will be Madam who will select the president of her choice !
Now the presidential candidature is getting bizarre. Mamata Banerjee and Mulayam singh rejected the candidature of Hamid Ansari as well as Pranab Mukherjee.
Instead the duo have suggested candidature of (1) Abul Kalam (2) Manmohan singh (3) Som Nath Chatterjee
Abul Kalam is clealy unacceptable to congress. Manmohan singh is Prime Minister and his candidature will need swearing in another P.M. This very process may bring uncertainty as UPA partners especially Mamata and may be Mulayam also create more trouble and chaos. The name of expelled C.P.I(M) leader is obviously included to tease the left.
Now this is number game and we can hardly expect any understanding in U.P.A. There is also not much time left as dates of election have been announced.
