Sharad Pawar favors non political President. Is this not funny. President performs political functions. Why should the incumbent be non political?
If so, why not non political ministers, parliamentarians and legislators?

At least ministers should be selected from non political back ground with political science and mastery over the subject of their portfolios. In US they prefer to have experts as secretaries (ministers) from the respective fields.
In U.S.A., the political system is Presidential. Their system cannot be adopted by us. Our secretaries are I.A.S. and they have knowledge and experience. The ministers are also usually well experienced and appointed by President on advice of Prime Minister.
The point is that statecraft is political function and talking of non political means nothing. This is like non medical doctor, non science scientist, non technical engineer etc.
Non politician actually means somebody not involved in party politics. But the fact remains that Presidential appointment is political one and so the incumbent must have a good legal or academic background. It will be best to select an ex Justice/ Chief Justice of Supreme Court. Abdul Hamid, Vice President may also be good choice.
Consensus President is unlikely as BJP does not wish to support Congress nominee even if given option to select vice President.

President should be nonpolitical and Abul Kalam is my first choice after that Somnath Chattejee .
Abdul Kalam was the President. I doubt whether CPI(M) and left parties will repeat the mistake by voting Som Nath Chatterjee to Presidential appointment. Better choose between Pranab Mukherjee and Abdul Hamid Ansari, vice President.
Pranab Mukherjee is right to say that no body may become President by mere wish. This is party decision. In a democracy, political party plays dominant role. So, nomination by congress/ UPA is a precondition for election as President. Pranab Mukherjee rightly stated:
