There is very strong demand for awarding Bharat Ratna to Sachin Tendulkar for maing two centuries. In the past, there have been demands for awarding Babu Jag jeevan Ram and Chaudhary Charan singh. It appears that the public perception about the criteria of giving awards like Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan and Padma Shri is not clear. Let us discuss what should be the criteria for giving these awards. It is important that only really deserving should get the award. This is a matter of national dignity also.

Thats a tough question you asked..But very relevant one.
To begin with..can you please tell us what is the present criteria.?..or..In your opinion what should be the criteria.

I think the government has laid down criteria for it and these exist only in violations! If you look at the list of awardees you are sure to find names and wonder whether the very criteria were followed or not!Please don't ask for any specific name from me!

There are various field like literature, films, public life etc. People from different walks of life are eligible to get the award. so far only politicians with the exception of Lata Mangeshkar have got Bharat Ratna. Others have got Padma vibhushan and Padma shree. Sports is among the fields eligible for awards. Cricket is a very popular sports in India. Sachin Tendulkar has made a very remarkable achievement. He deserves the highest award.
