Whatever man do on earth would make him feel both happy and sad. If you laugh a lot, you will feel pain. Pain and sufferings are part o our life. We can't live without it.

Slaves were valuable and hence would be forced to work more may be by using whip but not unnecessarily tortured. These instruments can be seen as punishment device. Let me also mention spanking machine. This machine was used to beat as punishment. A human being could give light or very harsh strokes by getting bribe. But the machine would give all strokes with same force or as prefixed.

pain and sufferings if due to natural calamities or due to any problem is other thing but torture is something harrassing mentally as well as physically.
And in many areas of India only torture is still going on.

Kala Pani was the worst punishment. The prisoners were sent to Andaman Cellular jail. There were treated worse than animals. They were even used in place of bullocks.

By 1946, things had changed and prisoners were even allowed newspapers. This was result of mass hunger strike and agitation by certain political groups.

There is a prison in Bangalore, now converted to park. But I forget it's name :whistle:

Yes britishers used to send all the freedom fighter to that jail whom they used to think that they can be a threat for them and they used to kill them there by torturing them. :evil:
