Today is the most auspicious day of Thiruvananthapuram city....On Pooram star of Kumbham, 35 lakhs of women are offering pongala to Attukal Amma to get her blessings. My mother is offering 7 pots. Though I can't go there today, my mind and soul is seeking attukal amma's blessings and now, it is not here.

Actually, pongala is a derivation of Tamil Ponkal.
Also, Kannaki Amma is the heroine of Chilappathikaaram.(Tamil literature)
Adding some more.....

One of my friends in Trivendrum (Truvanthpuram) Has just posted in his message
JUST NOW "AGNI' (HOLY FIRE) HAS BEEN IGNITED IN ALL THE 3.5 MILLION EARTHEN POTS IN AND AROUND 10km AREA OF THE TEMPLE. SKY IS NOT VISIBLE DUE TO THE SMOKE EMANATING FROM THIS MASSIVE PONKALA PREPARATION.
Wow that must be some thing to watch.
Yes....at 10.30 am....
At 2.30 pm poojaris will come and sprinkle 'theertham' on each and every ponkala pot. Then only function is over.
More than 1000 Brahmin poojaris there......Each and every pot should be covered
3.5 million women....
My mother is doing in 7 pots.
Many are there who do it in 51, 101 and 1001 pots.
So, total count of pots is infinity..... :woohoo: :woohoo:
Also make white payasam, therali appam, mandapputt.....
Helicopters do this function around the temple with flowers and theertham....otherwise it is not possible.

Not 10 km.....If we draw a circle with radius 7 km...then only reach all people. i.e 14 kms total :woohoo:
Today our city is really a yagasala.
Thanks for sharing a lot of information on this religious festival. Happy Attakul Pongala!
I want to add some thing more....
I have gone there for more than 10 times. It's my experience.
Before dawn itself...i.e around 5 o'clock, gates of almost all houses will be opened and women rushes to houses. Make hearth with bricks inside courtyard of each and every house of the city and place earthern pots filled with water. Almost all houses, the residential people themselves give water....either motor or from well ...they give it to strangers. It's really a nice thing.
I usually prefer some tree shade....also...if no hearths near...if so, we don't have to suffer much once Pongala hearths are lightened. :)
Most houses give free meals to devotees and provide them with every help.
After people gone, it remains the duty of house owner and family to clean his home premises. Yet, next year also, he invites people with great happiness.
That's why people are arriving here every year.
I wish I could make it on a pongal day in Trivendrum once in my life. I had been there several times but never on a Pongal day.
Nice information about Attukal Pongala and nice pictures shared also.
