in this thread a new homophone will be posted every day which will help improve our command over the language.
homophones are words that sound alike but are spelled differently.

homophone of the day is:
hail and hale
1.hail: to greet or to come from. eg. i hale from jaipur.
2.hale: sound or healthy. eg im hale and hearty enough to go to the party.
Ate : its means you had something as food. e.g : I ate the meal right now.
Eight : its the number. e.g: I am in Eight Standard.
thats such a common homophone and yet i never realised it...thanks for sharing ronark

i like to share some words.
dye - a substance used to colour a material. eg: the dyes stuff used on the garment is very good.
die - a solid metal used for cutting or making a required shape. eg: i have die to make the same kind of key.
cannon:a big gun
canon :rule. eg: we shold follow the canon of morality in our lives.
Another example of homophones is:

hangar and hanger
hangar: a large building where aircrafts are kept.
hanger: a curve piece of wire to hang clothes upon
seek-to look for. eg- she is just seeking love and sick-not well,eg- she is sick and would be doing fine soon.
And the last post byme reminds me of another set of words.
fine-penalty, eg- you could be fined for breaking law
fine- good, very good, fine. eg- In response to how are you?, I am fine, thank you.
the eg of fine is not a homophone vidhimayur, its a homonym..ie words spelled and pronounced alike but with different meanings
I was just about to post in in homonym and thought of posting reign and rain here.so thought would post this in homonym and delete fine from here.Guess you are fast at checking replies!! :)

reign-rule
rain-water from clouds.
whine-to complain over something.
wine- hard drink.
she whines over his behaviour.
He whines for wine!!
haha..had to...because that could have confused people..and the purpose of this thread would have failed

canvas and canvass
canvas: is a cloth or fabric. Eg. i have bought a canvas bag.
canvass: to conduct a survey or to examine thoroughly. Eg. she canvassed all the stores to buy a jeans.
Were and where.

All know the difference between the both.

Can i call this ones as homophones.
no sasikant..these two have a big difference in their pronunciation so were and where are not homophones...
Whereas there and their are a set of homophones..
Can i call Reply and replay as homophones.

This two are very nearly pronounciations.
yeah i think they can be considered as homophones as pronunciation is quite similiar
