I think a is a letter in alphabet and when it is used in sentences to indicate one as number it is word as it is a part of speech.

The mostly used letter in english is not A.

'a' to 'z' are letters are alphabets. A word is composed of several sound that convey a meaning. 'a' is a letter. 'a' is also a word meaning 'one'. This is single letter word. Similarly, 'I' is also a single letter word.

Deepak is right, 'a' is not a word only a letter. It is also an article like Sarala said but it only makes sense when it is used in conjunction with another word like, A Pen, A Pencil etc. Used singularly, it makes no sense or meaning, hence its not a word!

Yes E is most used letter and Q is used in less.Thanks for nice information.
