RBI has advised everyone not to write anything on the notes...such notes cannot be used for any official uses... you wont see such a note from the ATMs

i too have found this,when i go to pay bills.
I think the Government workers,by writing it with pencil or pen,count the 500 or 1000 rupee note. This is the way to keeping records.
Even in bank,i have seen this.
This is a bad practice writing with pen but pencil can be used.Is it right?


If writing is prohibited then it should not matter whether it is written with pen or pencil.
To record the numbers of note bankers use pencils and the advantage is you can erase it.

Writing on pen or pencil is not allowed as per RBI rule. if they need to record the number of notes then they can use it on separate paper. this way they can avoid violating the rules.
I found many people use currency notes for writing addresses, phone numbers etc. But this is really bad
