There is no Ramayana without Ravana. Rama has no relevance without Ravana.
Ravana is so much hated for mere kidnapping of Seeta. He just kidnapped her and capt in captivity in a highly dignified way in Ashok Vatika, giving her VIP treatment due to her as a princess. He did not even touch her.
Ravana's effigy is burnt in most parts of country. But is this justified. So many women are not only kidnapped but even molested and raped and the offenders go unpunished.
There are many who consider that Ravana is worth worship. Ravana is worshipped in many parts of M.P., Kangra (H.P.) and Kanpur (U.P.)

Kidnapping or whatever he did is somewhat not an acceptable things by anyone that is why he is been hated. And in those day he was considered a big devote of Lord Siva which itself show that every thing has both bad and good sides.
I think he is uncomparable to today's criminals.

I remember studying a malayalam dram called 'Lanka Lakshmi' in which the author explain things from Ravana's point of view. Ravana grew up alone in the forest, he became what he became with his own efforts, he's 10 heads literally means that Ravana has the intelligence of 10 man. In that it says, Ravana kidnapped Seeta for the good of Lanka and not for his sexual desires.
Ravana is a great devoti of Lord shiva.Ravana is a great in music also.He once pulled his intestines and played a music. by listerning to the music and the slokas of ravana, siva appeared to ravana. and shiva gave him a boon then ravana asked sivas atma linga. and siva gave ravana atma linga. But due some reasons ravana gives that linga to hold to a cow boy.as ravana need to goto sandyavandana. as time is going on the cow boy kept the linga on the floor and went away. when ravana came and saw then the linga sticked to the ground. ravana tried alot to pull it, but the linga was becoming big according to the energy ravana is keeping on the linga.finally ravana was left with a big linga.
Yes Ramayana would be nothing without Ravana. and yes he is worshiped at many places. But he was a very knowledgeable man , just because of his mistakes he lost his credentials and is now not known for his merits but his mistakes. this goes to show how our mistakes in life can ruin all our good deeds and credits. so before doing any deed we should think twice.

Everyone does good as well as bad. Nobody is ultimately remembered for good or bad. One is remembered more for success. History favors the success and is written accordingly. In olden times, there was no free press or media. Hence, the court poets would write favoring the victor. As Rama won, literature favors him. If Ravana had won, all literature would make Ravana a hero and Rama would be villain. Rather, there would be epic 'Ravanayan' praising Ravan and condemning Rama for invading Lanka.

what you have explained holds true in history. in history the winner gets the chance to rewrite a story.
but in mythology , the hero or the good part will win ultimately. the story which many believes to be true and many others believes as just a belief in my opinion will always have rama wining and ravan losing.
