Government and aided schools across the state have registered a drop of over 1.96 lakh students putting a big question mark over the fate of more than 2,200 teachers.
The director of public instructions arrived at the figure after compiling the reports of the final head count carried out in 13 districts on July 12 and Alappuzha district on July 13. Compared to last year the shortage of students is an alarming 81,000. Last year these schools had registered a shortfall of 1.15 lakh.
There are hopes that 2,200 teachers who stand to lose their jobs because of student shortfall, are likely to be accommodated as protected. But sources say many teachers may actually lose their jobs after the final fixation of strength.

The teachers cannot be employed unless there is work for them. Reduction in number of students is sure to decrease strength of teachers. Let us hope that government will protect employment of teachers by providing them alternative job or retaining them as supernumerary. But further recruitment has to stop.
