There are some revelations about private life and inner urges of mahatma Gandhi in a recent book. This has caused resentment in some circles.
This reminds us that even the greatest of men are human first and not free from the psychological traits that may be be found in any ordinary person. We need to appreciate the lead of great leaders like Gandhi and not hero worship them.

The author of the book denies the revelations about Gandhi. According to him, the controversy on book is unwarranted.

The move to ban book on Gandhi is highy undemoctaric and infringement of freedom of expression. Mahatma Gandhi was very great and we regard him for his unique contribution to humanity. However, fact remains that he was also a man of flesh and bones like ordinary mortals. Even if the revelations are true, he does not lose his greatness. Let us respect and not worship great leaders.

The foreign writer could not create controversy. In India, leaders are worshiped unlike the west. We forget that even the greatest leader is a man of flesh and bones and could have any weakness.
The Gujarat Government has banned the 'controversial' book. This shows that India is not yet a mature democracy.

Thew Center is believed to be contemplating law that will make any insulting remark to mahatma Gandhi a punishable criminal offence.
This is height of personality cult and negation of all democratic norms. Nobody will be punished for insulting Emperor Ashok, Akbar or any other great man in history. What is so sacred about Gandhi.
We all respect Mahatma Gandhi as father of nation in view of his contribution to freedom struggle. But he was also a man of flesh and bones and could have any human weakness. It will be blatant misuse of authority, breach of democratic norms and the fundamental right of expression to deny the authors independent appraisal of historic personalities.

I read a new news that the book is going to be banned.I don't remember the state.
The book is banned in Gujarat. I have given this information with link in this thread itself.
The intellectuals in India are now raising voice against ban on book. Banning book is highy undemocratic and must be condemned by all right thinking people. Apparently, India is not yet a mature democracy. In a democracy, nobody howsoever improtant is never worshipped.

Ajay,
Our mind is clear and hence we feel so.But when a new comer reads this he may feel hatred towards Gandhi.
Gandhi is well known everywhere and there is no newcomer as such. The Book may contain only some portion considered objectionable. The author says he has not written anything of the sort being publicized. Much hue and cry is being made even without reading the book.
Gujarat Government banned the book without any one having read even one sentence of the book and Central Govt. contemplates law against remarks to Gandhi. These facts suffice to show that we are not yet mature and true democracy and we indulge in person worship.
Independent press and personalities are voicing against undemocratic and senseless ban on the book. Mahatama Gandhi was for open ideas and he was a free thinker. But in his name, freedom of expression is being curbed.

Even certain portions of Gandhi's 'My experiments with truth' may be unpalatable to many Gandhians. Experiments with truth included experiments with celebacy which involved sexuality. Probably, Gandhians skip those portions of book written by Gandhi. It is a million dollar question whether the 'Gandhians' will consider banning the book 'My experiments with truth'. They cannot. So, let them not talk of banning a book on Gandhi by author who is more mature than these self styled 'puritan' fake Gandhians.

At last, good sense has dawned on Union Government. The 'controversial' book is not to be banned in view of author's assertion that he did not write anything of the sort.
However, it is surprising that no authority responsible for deciding the controversy has cared to procure a copy of the book and form an unbiased opinion after reading this.

The controversy is still going on.I think after reading the book have to put opinion now.
There is no real controversy. The book is not yet available in India and nobody has read. The demand for ban is only on basis of some comments on the book in foreign press. The author has denied having written anything for which ban is demanded.
It is an indication of immaturity of Indian democracy that we worship personalities. It is okay to appreciate Mahatma Gandhi for his role in freedom struggle and his movement for self reliance and removal of untouchability and discrimination against weaker sections of society and women. However, Mahatma Gandhi was also a man of flesh and bones and he could have all traits that any normal human being could have. even if there re some comments about his sexuality, we should not feel offended.
The Government have categorically ruled out banning the book.

The controversial book on Gandhi reveals his flare about nicknames. Mahatma Gandhi nicknamed those he liked most and described them by nick name.
