Homophone: Pronunciation is same. Homonym: pronunciation or spelling is same. Thus there is slight and very subtle difference. Same pronunciation whether the spelling is same or not but different meaning is homophone. Homophone may also be homonym. Homonym is one with different spelling and meaning but same pronunciation. Please read the following links.

So both may be used to indicate the same meaning. Why so narrow differentiation?
Homophone is more about sound whereas homonym is more about spelling. I have given link in my post. That may clarify. This is a matter of academic discussion in Grammar class room. we need not bother too much about this. It will suffice that we use words correctly.
