Honesty does pay ultimately. This is straight and gives mental peace. Dishonesty pays quickly at cost of mental peace. Honesty helps in reaching new heights in career whereas a dishonest person will satisfy himself with immediate gains and forgo his future prospects. I saw this in a government office. An honest employee gave all his time to do his task straight and honesty and prepared well for departmental exam and got quick promotion that even changed his cadre. Others were satisfied with immediate illegal cash income and had no time to think of departmental exam and promotion. Similarly, in business, an honest person may get small margin but will earn more profit by way of more customers and high turnover.
