The supreme court has reserved judgment on mercy killing appeal of a nurse in state of coma since three decades. In fact, her existence can hardly be considered as life. Her brain is inactive and only breathing gives resemblance of life. Her life is worse than death. Euthanasia petition is most justified.

Aruna Shanbaug is the name of the nurse who his lying in a vegetative state for, belive it or not, 37 years! It would be a great mercy for her and her relatives to put her to rest with dignity. I do not know about others or even the fact whether euthanasia can be considered moral or immoral, but Aruna desrves to pass away in peace and dignity and they should grant the permission for her.

In fact, her life is only in name. Mere breathing is not life. Moreover, she is not be killed. What is required is to end the process to artificially keep her 'alive'. Withdrawal of life support system in such cases is an act of humanity and not killing.
Supreme court will decide today the mercy killing plea of Aruna shanbaug. The only issue involved is that the ruling in favor of mercy killing could be misused by many for settling property disputes. It will not be proper to deny her the option to end her painful life by withdrawing life support. Provision can be made for taking decision in such cases at top administrative level in consultation with medical authorities.

The supreme court has turned down the mercy killing petition of Aruna. A distinction has been made between active and passive euthanasia. The Supreme court has decided that passive euthanasia can be allowed but not active one.
Now it is necessary to clearly define and draw difference between active and passive euthanasia.

The supreme Cort has ruled that there can be no active mercy killing like administering lethal injection. Passive euthanasia by withdrawal of treatment or life support system is permissible by High court order after getting advice and opinion of doctors, family and friends. In the case of Aruna, the petitioner had no right to move the euthanasia plea and the doctors are yet willing to continue the treatment.
But in another case, there is hope of getting sanction for euthanasia.

Goverment is considering enacting fresh law on passive euthanasia. It may be recalled that apex court has decided in favor of passive euthanasia in case of brain death subject to certain safeguards like close family members/ friends consent, medical advice. Active euthanasia in form of administering lethal injection is ruled out. In case of brain death, patients may be allowed to die graciously by withdrawal of life support system.
