The issue of wife beating has come to surface in view of diplomat's involvement in Britain. But wife beating is a very normal in India. This is considered as a private affair and police do not interfere. See the link below:

Petty quarrels between spouses is a normal family matter. But when the quarrel is communicated outside or there is excessive violence of criminal nature, it is a matter of public importance. Moreover, such action by a diplomat serving in Britain has brought disrepute to entire nation. This is not family matter.
