New Delhi: Four Chinese universities figure in the list of the world's best 50 educational institutions, even as India's sole representative in the top 200 -- IIT Bombay -- has slipped 24 places from its 2009 position.

The University of Cambridge has replaced Harvard as the world's best university in the prestigious QS World University Rankings, 2010, published in London yesterday. Six of the top 10 universities in the world are American, the other four are in the UK. The US and UK share positions 1 through 17 among themselves.

The QS rankings, earlier published in collaboration with Times Higher Education, are an annual ranking of the top 500 universities in the world, based on an academic reputation index, employer reputation index, institution inclusion, and research among other criteria.

Current government is spending crores in Advertising their so called 'Achievment Adverts' on commercial channels rather spending same amount on essential needs [Education,Health,Allowance for the needy].
I am not at all surprised by this findings. It's a poor reflection of our standards.
I agree that, Even though our students from IIT and IIM rocks everywhere they are not able to make it into the top list.
According to a study conducted by UNESCO in its preparation of 100 premier universities of the world there is not a single Indian university!
It is not really a good sign.Slipping in global ranks indicate where we are heading ?.Also, the professors in reputed institutes are heavily loaded with all government projects and they really dont have time to concentrate on student's research work.
We lack Research and base our university education on rote learning rather than thinking.

Nagalashmi,
Ask only one thing are you happy with your university or not if yes it does not matter whether your University appears in the list or not. If no then also it doesnot matter because we can't change our university and shift to some foreign university during our course.
Hope atleast hiring of foriegn faculty would improve the standard of our education in univeristies. :) .Universities should encourage research work of students rather than conducting a viva to enhance their knowledge.
Thanks for bringing this information here this will give a yardstick for the Govt to improvise upon education policies.

Thanks for the news Neetu..sorry i have reposting the same thing as new thread.. :P

We are lacking in standards that is the main thing which ever IIT insitution of India should know. And many things come into consideration for university being in top list.facilities, campus placements and faculty..so we can think about these too..
A very prominent educationist recently wrote an article on how research has suffered in recent decades and we have lesser number of research papers submitted.Even some smaller countries fare better on this score.
