It seems to be very much similar to the Social Security Number in USA!

Good move by india, It must be issued in order to avoid confusion when two having same names and initials.

Yes -- This is a very good initiative. :)

This process has two parts.
First the government officials would come to collect our details and give a slip regarding the entry done.
Secondly, another team would come to take out pictures.
I have already given my details to the officials ... Waiting for the second time visit.. :)

I think all other identification cards can be discarded then.

This will be done in phases. It would take very long time to complete this process. And in the mean while, if the government changes, the process may slow down. The main idea behind this initiative is very genuine. This should be a social security number too.

This UID is a great thing, really it will help in many things i future..

It is good initiative by government now Indian can also have something to identify themselves :)
