The Union Cabinet has approved the country's new education policy. Earlier the education policy was formulated in 1986 and revised in 1992. Dr. K. NEP 2019 prepared by the committee constituted to draft the National Education Policy headed by Kasturirangan and based on the feedback and suggestions of the stakeholders received thereon.
Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said that the consultation process for the new education policy was started in January 2015. Consultations at the grassroots level from village level to state level were achieved in multidisciplinary consultation process on 33 identified subjects. A comprehensive, time-bound, participatory, bottom-up consultation process was carried out in about 2.5 lakh gram panchayats, 6600 blocks, 6000 urban local bodies, 676 districts and 36 states, union territories.
On 31 October 2015, the government constituted a 5-member committee under the chairmanship of TSR Subrahmanyan, former Cabinet Secretary to the Government of India, to formulate a new education policy. Which submitted its report on 27 May 2016.

Here are 10 important things to know about the new NEP
1. Board exams can be in modular form, now board exams will be based on knowledge and aptitude, discouraging memorization theory.
2. In the multiple entry and exit system, certificate will be given after the first year, diploma after the second year and degree after three-four years.
3. All higher education institutions, except legal and medical colleges, will be by a single regulator.
4. The general norms for private and public higher education institutions will be adopted under the new education policy of the central government. Education Secretary Amit Khare said at the press conference that till date we have different standards for different standalone institutions, different universities for central universities. The new education policy states that standards for quality reasons will be the same for everyone, not ownership.
5. According to the new education policy there will be a common entrance examination to be held for admission to universities and higher education institutions. This examination will be of high school students by 2035.
6. The Cabinet has decided to increase public spending on education to around 6% of GDP, which is currently around 4.43%.
7. The government is targeting a ratio of 100% gross enrollment from prep school to secondary level by 2030.
8. A medium of mother tongue education should be made until the 5th standard.
