The romance with ECR continues for all the young couples and the many expats who flock to this road to settle down.

However, with increasing number of accidents and a survey that listed it as a dangerous stretch, thanks to its accident statistics, people now call for smarter policing and for a start, well-lit roads.

Suresh, the secretary of the resident’s association of ECR, says, “Thanks to the encroachments and lack of thorough policing, many senior citizens have been knocked down by buses navigating on a narrow strip.”

Sam Paul, an educationist, who has multiple properties on the same road, says, “They have an outrageous speed limit of 40 kms and this wouldn’t be so much of a problem if the road were a three-lane road.”

He adds, “But for now the road has only a single lane and being a highway that leads all the way to Velankanni, has a lot of commuters that are either hurrying to get there or just really drunk and can’t control themselves.”

Even street-lighting is very poor on this stretch, and most lanes that people use as short-cuts while returning from Puducherry, Mahabalipuram or a picnic spot have little or no lighting at all.
